Default Melanistic Pheasant

I had heard that there were a few out there, and today we finally found one.

I was just looking at the stocking numbers.

I only looked at the local release site so don't know about other sites.
Here they released half regular and half melanistic this year.

Sure is a cool looking bird.

Thanks for posting.

I actually chatted with the driver a couple of weeks ago, and he said they hadn't released any to that point. He told me that the numbers were very limited, and they would be sent randomly to the sites starting the last half of October.

This is from the ACA who conduct the releases.

Quote:
Starting in mid-October we will be releasing up to 1000 melanistic ringneck pheasants mixed in with our regular ringneck releases. Melanistic ringneck pheasants are the same as the pheasants we normally release, but have a natural genetic mutation. This gives them a striking, dark, iridescent plumage.
Even 1000 birds is less than 4% of the total birds released.

I was hoping to get one for a mount but after seeing yours I’d rather not. It looks like they’ve got the same ratty looking tail feathers as the normal ones do. Nice colours but would make a terrible mount.

23-24 per site the entire season. Don’t know how that’s half when they dump 86 birds per day per site.

There is no way that half of the birds to one northern site will be melanistic. They never even released any for the first six weeks, and the are releasing for less than eight weeks. As I posted, the number of melanistic birds is less than 4% of the total release. Even your 23-24 per site may be optimistic for the northern sites, considering they are only releasing these birds for such a short time in the northern sites.

The other guys claiming that, not me. I spoke with the chicken truck guy one day and he said each gets 86 roosters per release. The website said there’s 1,000 melanistics for 42 sites from October 15 on. That equates to 23.8 melanistics per site, so for some sites it’ll be about 4 released per release day until they stop end of October. For the ones going later into November it’ll be even less per release day.

Yeah, but what are the odds of 5 of them being released in the same area so you can get one Bessie....

That is a cool looking bird.

The driver told me the last releases will be the 25th, so not even the end of the month, so about ten days of releasing the melanistic birds up here. I expect to be out two or three more times, so the odds are against me killing another melanistic bird this year are slim.

I hunted whitetail north site lots this fall and never saw one or talked to anyone who had.

The release operator indicated that they would be releasing 1,100 birds on this site this season, but was no mention of melanistic.

He did mention that the border issues due to Covid delayed their getting hatching eggs, and set the program back by a couple of weeks so most of birds released were not as mature as they would have wanted.

In all my days of hunting pheasants have only encountered one melanistic bird, that was near Brooks about 40 yrs ago. They do make for an impressive mount, but then you can also say that about the normal rooster pheasant.

Gotta love that bird, and only hope the govt can continue supporting the release program.

Stop looking at the bead, and you will hit the birds.
