Small spinners like size 0 panther martins should work. Also can try tying a fly to the spin rod line with a bobber and weight so he can cast.

That link is just a pic , i currently just use a light road 4ft and low resistance floater i got at canadian tire. I caught 2 with worm and hook but was out for almost 6 hours. I have a mepps #3 lure aglia. i wonder will that work with a worm on for bit bigger brook trout

Get a few bobbers, get a few flies, tie a fly to the line, hook bobber on say four to six feet from fly, toss it out, if not happy with distance add weight close to bobber and toss it out again, slow retrieve, or let sit.
Walk around the lake you are fishing and observe the types of bugs floating on the water or on the bottom to match fly colours to what the fish are eating.
We did this often in remote lakes, poor mans fly fishing, remember the key to fishing is to be very adaptive and creative.

Sometimes you just need to go back to basics. A simple Split shot, Hook and worm setup will get you started on the path of catching more trout. If you want to branch out a bit, try a simple twister tail in White tipped with a Minnow. But When in doubt tie on a Repps Black Fury.
Hope this helps

1/2 a large dew worm on a #8 j hook. Toss it out as far as you can and let it sit for awhile. Repeat process every 10 min or so. Good luck.

Without fly fishing, I like a hook and worm with a split shot and sometimes a bobber for creeks and shore fishing. If I can troll, I like a gang troll with a threaded minnow and tiny treble hook about 2 1/2 ft back.

I would try the smallest Len Thompson spoon you can buy. I like the orange with black dots myself. When you cast it out, let it sit for 5 or so seconds before starting to reel, giving it a chance to sink a few feet.

brook trout love to chase a little spinner, especially if it's got an orange fly dressing on the hook
another trick is to put on a smallish spoon with the hook removed, and instead tie 8 inches of line to the back end and trail a small streamer or wet fly. It's kinda like trolling with a flasher

I like tying a woolly bugger on a jig head myself.
