"Parkland RCMP would like to remind people that there are signs posted at Wabamun Lake warning people of open water or thin ice. The consequences of ignoring these signs can be quite serious."
Not that signs are needed. But people choosing to disregard such warnings and don't test the ice for themselves gets no sympathy from me.

"The driver and seven passengers were able to get out of the truck in time before the truck sank into the lake."

Seem the post on Facebook. Seems they drove too close to the train bridge and it's known to be thin there.

The articles never mentioned what area of the lake. I know that under the train trestle never really freezes well

There are 3 areas I know that are sketchy - The trestle bridge, a couple gas pockets and tin ice near Sundance and the bay on the far west side of the lake to the south through and around the weeds there.
The trestle bridge is almost every year someone "goes for it" - the only good news is, it isn't terribly deep there - don't get me wrong - deep enough - but not much higher than the roof of a truck cab I wouldn't think (6ft max)

When I fished there a lot...every time the temp dropped to -35 Celsius and you got a skiff of snow...you knew someone was going to try driving under the trestle.

Cut & Paste from a F/B post ....
Seen this at wabamun yesterday . Apparently that guy had been seen ripping all over that lake doing like 100 km/h and just driving like an idiot LOL.

Number one ice fishing rig..... sports car convertible.
Saweeet!
It's only fun until some one loses an eye or puts it under the ice at the Wabamun trestle.
Be safe out there folks.

The articles mention 2 trucks, one with 7 passengers. Obviously the sports car isn't either of those - does anyone know where the trucks went through? Its February and the ice is really thick everywhere. I was just wondering where, and if there were actually 3 vehicles that went through (or maybe the above is an old pic?), or if the article just assumed that the second vehicle was a truck when actually it looks like maybe a Mitsubishi?

So far, these are the only 2 pic's from yesterday on F/B.
Someone posted "What they are not saying is it was over on the power plant side.... you think the hot cooling water being pumped in is enough to stay away from there". Another fellow posted "They both went through by the train bridge".
Maybe someone will still post some more pic's.

Taking the Eclipse convertible out for a rip on Wabamun was just the start of the problems...
