The manual says that their pelt loses value by early February and after that it won't be profitable to trap them. I would suspect that it is because they lose their guard hair but I have no experience in trapping them. I hope that helps to answer your question.

May not be profitable , but you will still be doing the game bird population a favour .

A good friend of mine is having issues with them I caught one a while ago and put on a coyote board ( I know the specs are close but not the same.). Then nothing and no tracks for awhile. But it is quite warm now so not sure if I should pelt them or not.

Some very good coon are taken in the spring, in fact the very best of the winter. Coon are generally harvested the heaviest in the fall before they go dormant abd their pelts are mostly on the early side. If I was going to get one tanned, I'd want a spring coon because he has his heavy winter hair. Occasionally the coon come up during the winter for a brief time, and that is when they are at their best, but if you want to get a bunch of nice coon, then spring is the time to go.

You will get some that have scratch necks, which is a rubbed looking neck. What happens with this scenario is the coons are riding each other and chewing on the bottom buddy's neck. I think these ones are gay! Though stretched inside out, the grader easily IDs a scratch neck by bites to the leather and it is assumed the neck is destroyed.

Try these new DP traps for coon. Apparently nothing easier. Stick it in the ground on an angle, put some cat food in the trap and stake the chain, done. Set can be improved with a shot of fresh pressed fish oil on the ground to attract. We carry both the Duke and the Z but I haven't used these traps yet myself. However, I am told they are the cat's meow, and have taken the USA coon trappers by storm.

Cut an inspection window out of the hide when stretching. 2 inches wide from the dink hole or otherwise and down.

I have some z traps and caught him in one. It worked good. I baited some with marshmallows I was told worked. They didn't like it so I used some dollar store oysters more than enough bait for 8 traps in one tin. Very happy with z traps.
