Default Giant Cold Lake Trout!!

Well sorry everyone no video on this one......But we did connect on a big Cold Lake trout this weekend so heres the story:

Only getting the chance to fish for a few hours that morning, we decided to explore a few new spots we had found in the summer time. It was a very slow morning and anxiety was beginning to set in on whether or not we made the right decision to check out this spot. We had no fish to show at this point and tensions were starting to rise. Kate and I were sitting in the shack making jokes and goofing around to pass the time when all of a sudden, she says “I’M HOOKED UP!” The battle began as she slowly gained on this fish bringing it towards the surface. The drag was sporadically letting out line, so I decided to give it a couple more cranks not sure if I had checked for the correct drag before we dropped down. Shortly after, this fish went on a 60ft run straight to the bottom! Once again, I got the chance to check the drag and at this exact moment I looked at her and said, “Kate, that drag is tight! You have a BIG BIG fish on!” This is also the exact moment it became frantic in the shack in order to get everything moved out of the way to help her land this fish. Her arms were getting tired as she fought this fish when finally, we saw the line switching sides of the hole; this fish was near the ice. As I leaned over, the leader came up and I got to lay eyes on this magnificent fish for the first time. Thankfully, its head found the hole very quickly. I then got to lay my hands on it and show Kate what a true Cold Lake giant looks like. Quickly we popped the T.C. Moto Meathead XL out of its mouth and got a quick measurement to verify this fish came in at 37 ¼”! Thankfully, Scott had been close by and with a quick text mid-fight saying, “Kate was fighting a BIG BIG” he rushed over just in time to see it coming out of the hole. He was able to snap a couple quick pictures of us together with the fish before we got it back into the water for a nice healthy release.

It’s been 5 years since I landed my Cold Lake PB measuring in at 37” on the nose. To this day, I will never forget that moment of my first trophy lake trout and getting to share it with my friends that day. This day definitely tops that as this was Kate’s second time on the ice chasing lake trout and it will be one that will be very hard to top again. It’s moments like this that we go fishing for with friends, family and loved ones. I couldn’t be happier or more excited to get to share this moment with both Kate and Scott.

Thanks for the read and support everyone! Now Here's the pictures:

Lol. Everyone wants a length until they catch a trophy. That's about a 20 lb'er FYI.

Big grats to you guys on a beautiful fish. I would love to see the LiveScope feed of it if you have it.

Thats part of the joy of using a quality rod is knowing how dependable it is. My close friend caught a 43" over in manitoba on one a couple weeks ago and said it handled it like a dream!

Thats the joy of taking care of them and releasing them nice and healthy is someone else can have their day made when that fish gets hungry to eat again!

Like others said probably around the 20lb range give or take a few. Wasn't a super fat one but it was solid muscle and a nice thick back on it. I'm more of a length person as it's easiest to get a quick measurement and get that fish back in the water asap.

OP that's a beauty! Great colours!! Love those orange fins!!

My pb was a 35"x20" c&r I caught in 2004. Using the lake trout weight calculator it comes out to 17.5lbs. If the OP didn't weigh the fish but at least took a girth measurement you could punch the numbers into the calculator and at least get a fairly close weight.
The calculator also has a pike calculator and it's darned close. Last year I caught a pb pike that measured 39.5"x22" and it pulled my lip grip scale to 21lbs-7oz. On the calculator it came out to 21.24lbs so it's fairly accurate. I have had replicas made of both fish.

“Kate might have a bib big on”

I started the slow 50 yard walk over to their tent. About 20 yards away I hear, “It’s big Kate” I zip open the door to peak in and Mat is holding the giant head in the 10” hole.

He pulled it out and got a quick pic on the board and then back into the water while Kate left the tent and I got the camera ready. 6 or so quick pics and back into the water she went. One soft kick and back to the depths she went.

Was awesome to be a part of for sure.

Congrats again Kate
