Default Where can one find bait?

I am looking for some maggots and minnows and seems not one of many regular spots have anything but smelts and worms. I am in Drayton Valley and heading south to fish Buck, Gull, Sylvan... ??

There is a shell station in Devon that has. Turn left at first intersection when coming up the hill from the river.

I got maggots and minnows at TFH south yesterday and the same today at Cabelas North. Neither had a lot of stock and only Evergreen Shiners. No Parker’s or Candle Lake shiners.

Try Buck lake Hardware or the general store right at the Buck lake townsite.

If there are no maggots to be had a good substitute can be little slivers of chicken heart or bacon fat.

Some lakes you see minnows and shiners down the hole. Put on a small treble hook with a maggot or two and catch a few. Best bait you can get.

More a survival tip but could be used in any situation for bait. Worth the price of admission today.

Another very small maggot sized larvae that can be found all winter around many lakes. The Goldenrod Gall Fly. A little smaller than the maggots you buy but still a similar bait.

Along many natural shorelines you might find the plant goldenrod. In the winter the stalks still stand. Any goldenrod plants that have what looks like a bulb or ball in their stalk will possibly have one small larvae in it. (Top picture in this website shows the bulbs.) The grub overwinters in the bulb. (pic of opened bulb.) If the larvae is frozen just warm it up and watch it squirm.

This website talks about the fly and how to extract the larvae.

Unfortunately the bait supply in Drayton seems inconsistent lately. Good luck only thing I can think of is try the pet store for wax worms to substitute maggots

The Fas Gas near Buck Lake had the emerald shiners as of last Sunday. Didn't check on price as already had some. Just dew worms in the fridge no maggots.

Try pet smart or a pet store,, you can get live grasshoppers and mealworms for twice the amount and half the price of fishing stores. You can even get 1000 freeze dried mealworms that though delicate are stunningly great bait,, if you can't bait five, you get 950 more tries, lol. If you put some loose in a tub with pieces of apple they kinda rehydrate. They might have maggots, but alas, it is now new years Eve.

Agreed. I've started going to my neighbourhood PetSmart for mealies and maggots.

Anyone able to locate any brand of minnows around Edmonton?

Even the green tub brand will do. I can’t seem to find any.

If any of you guys are really tight on bait, I have a good quantity of very life-like artificial Herring, Anchovy and Minnows.

Located in Parkland County
