There still tons of them out there, but it’s dated and I’m betting a lot of the Older less efficient cases will become less popular.

Efficiency is a very relative thing and often exists only in a person's mind .
To explain my above statement , if a cartridge was valid 50 years ago as accurate and with a good killing reputation I doubt if the same cartridge has degenerated as far as Efficiency goes.
However, because there are so many new cartridges coming every day, the older ones often get labeled as " not as efficient" when in reality there is no truth to the statement.

Also, some relate 'efficiency" to effectiveness. Those are two different yardsticks.

There is so much competition these days, that it isn't the big seller that it once was. But there are so many rifles already in circulation, that it will remain one of the most popular hunting cartridges.

My first big game rifle was a 30-06 paddle stock and I still own it. Killed plenty of animals with it and it gets the job done when I use it

It’s not fancy and it didn’t come with a creedmore purse but can’t say it’s failed me

The '06 has been around for over a hundred years. A US military round for 50. It has a following like the 3030 or 6.5x55. Nothing wrong with any of 'em.

Who cares who is talking about it or not talking about it. My advise is grab one out of your safe ( or add one to it if you dont have one) and take it out shooting/ hunting. It will proove its effectiveness. If you have even a lick of sense you will probably come to the same conclusion that most of the rest of the world has realized..the 30-06 is capable of probably 95% of any and all North America hunting and same would be true world wide except for true dangerous game in Africa.

With today's mono bullets, 30/06 covers all deer sized and bigger animals in north America. I love mine. Last year I got an Elk at 350yds.

Have a new XBolt ordered in the old war horse as we speak. I've owned many over the years. No flash or fan fare, they just work and are not super fussy on loads to stuff in them either.

I have gone full circle on this one. Turned my back on it in the early years, cause my dad shot one and praised it, so what could he possible know?
My first big game rifle was the .270 (Oconnor fan), but even it was too "old fashioned". Had to find something different.
Had a long term of "magnumitis" that I'm still not quite over (have serious affection for the .375 HH and the .358 Norma). The recoil doesnt really bother me, just seems a bit overkill!
40 years, and countless new whiz-bang cartridges, and I have come to really appreciate the '06 for what it is. Maybe the most versatile cartridge for all of north america. Moderate recoil, tons of bullet selection for reloading, and factory loads readily available anywhere ammunition is sold. I think I now have 6 or 7 of these old workhorses in the stable. Tough to beat, and I'm finally realizing the maybe my old man new what he was talking about!

Whaddaya mean where has it gone? One just went into my gun safe a week ago…joining some more modern cartridges like the 223, little brother 25-06, 7 cousin 280 REM, 7 REM mag, 7 STW, 7 PRC, two 7-08’s, another 30-06, 338 Federal and 340 Wby. Most of those (7 PRC excepted) are no spring chickens either. The old -06 still delivers the mail.

I have owned at least six 30-06's. All were fine rifles. Except for a Eddystone P17 that was sporterized that I used as a kid. (Worst kicking rifle I ever owned). There is something about the recoil pulse from the 308/30-06 family of cartridges that my body does not like. They have all preformed admirably. I just don't like the cartridges for that reason. I believe the 30-06 and the .270 are still the highest selling factory ammunition cartridges.

I have never owned a 30-06, or a 270win, or a 303. I have fired multiple rifles in each chambering, I just didn't see any reason to purchase any of the three, with so many other cartridges available.

Here is what a friend wrote a couple of us in an email on the topic.

“I know you all will be surprised, but I used a 30-06 with 168 TTSX's in Tajikistan. There are only three flights per week to Dushanbe on Turkish Airlines, which is the route nearly all American and Canadian hunters take. So, during the hunting season, there are always 6-8 hunters on each flight*that are going to various hunting units throughout the country. The method for getting cleared by customs with a firearm is straight out of Soviet times, so they herd the hunters into a room for about 2-3 hours while they all get cleared

As you can imagine, this leads to much discussion of where everyone is going, what you are hunting, what rifle you brought, etc. I was asked what I was shooting and said a 30-06 on a Mauser type action. They literally made fun of me, to the point that when we ran into one of the groups at a gas station on the way to the Pamirs, they referred to me as the '30-06' guy. The leader of the pack had a super-cool rifle in something called a 6 Dasher or some such thing, which seemed sort of crazy in a country where the only ammo I saw was in 300 Win Mag, 30-06 and 7.62x39.*

We all ended up back in the same room at the airport on our way out two weeks later. I had killed the biggest ibex by about six inches, so they were much more muted than on the way in.

In all seriousness, I had to shoot the ibex at 425 yards. I center punched the shoulder, as you can see in the photos. The ibex collapsed at the shot and rolled into a snow slide. The boar was 415, shot through the shoulder, ran 15 yards and collapsed. All with a cartridge that I can find ammo for in any reasonably well stocked Tim Horton's from here to Bulawayo. Not sure a lot can be gained as far as actual hunting goes.

I am all for having fun with obscure cartridges locally, but if I'm flying to the hunt, I'll take a 30-06 or 300 Win. :-)“
