Default Apple ideas...

Hey, guys,

I have 2 apple trees. The one in my front yard does OK (it's more shaded, and gets hit hard by the deer), but the one in the backyard has really put out this year. I brought in a PILE of apples this morning. After using about 10-15% of them to make 7 litres of applesauce, it's becoming clear that I need more ideas (even though they make GREAT applesauce!). I'm figuring on dried apple rings, maybe a couple of apple crumbles in the freezer, possibly apple butter or maybe cider...but the ones I brought in today are less than the number that are still on the trees!

Thinking that maybe some others could find themselves in the same situation, how about some apple ideas?

I've dehydrated a bunch into chips. They're right tasty.

Fresh pressed juice, or add yeast to it for cider. Let me know if you want pictures of my press.

Apple freeze well too. You can slices them etc. and use for cake, oatmeal and such later

I guess that problem is solved.

Default bottles

Let them sit around for a while until they ripen and get softer just before they spoil.
Then just cook them with just enough water in the kettle to get them soft.
Then press them into quart canning jars with something with a flat end ( I use a piece of 2" tree branch).
Then put them in a steam canner to finish cooking and seal them.
You can eliminate the steam canner step if your bottles are sterile and the apples are completely cooked, that's called hot packing.
I do not peel or core the apples. They are good eaten out of the bottle or put in a dish with ice cream or what ever sweetener.
Cider can be made at any time with the bottled apples.

I just transferred 46L of apple wine to the carboys.
Decided to make some custom cooking wine from another 100lbs of crabapples.
Going to make a Curried Crabapple wine for my East Indian Cooking.
I love the combination of apple and curry in Mulligatawny soup-so I am thinking- why not!

Cut them up and freeze them in crumble/pie portions. Then with minimal work you will have apple crumble/pies available all year round!

If you get appled out put an ad on here or kijiji. A surprising amount of people will come pick them up(free of course...).

I have one in the front yard. Very large apples for this region. I just let them hit the deck every year and feed the hares all winter. Sweetens the stew.
