Default Sika Deer Roar

I've just returned from 4 nights hunting sika deer on public land in the Kaweka Mountains. Sika are a small deer originally from east Asia that have been release in the center of the North Island.

Here are some iPhone photos of my trip:

Amazing sun rise while approaching the roaring deer

Early morning views

Sika wallow

Where he lay

Unfortunately the top point was broken

Ready for a special pick up a few days early so I could get the head into the fridge

Thanks for posting the pics! Does that deer have a gamey taste or are they good eating?

The Wife and I are going to start planning for a couple months in NZ next year.
We are going to do a tour of both Islands and then book a hunt with an outfitter yet to be determined.

Nice 500 as well!!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, they are a very cool deer to hunt. They move around a lot and are vocal. They're small, probably smaller than a whitetail. Good eating, but my stag won't be great as it's peak rut and they aren't in the best condition. I'll get patties and sausages made and have the summer deer for steaks

I can recommend an outfitter if your interested. Hes a friend of mine and does Kiwi style free range hunts, no fences or monster stags. Pm me if you would like his details.
