Default First Ebola case in U.S. - CDC

http://www.cnbc.com/id/102037055#.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday confirmed the first case of Ebola has been diagnosed in the United States.
The CDC will host a press conference at its Atlanta headquarters at 5:30 p.m., ET.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas officials said in a statement earlier Monday that an unnamed patient was being tested for Ebola and had been placed in "strict isolation" due to the patient's symptoms and recent travel history.

75% of the article on NBC read like this;

Last week, the CDC warned that between 550,000 and 1.4 million people in West Africa could be infected with Ebola by January 2015.

First thought: Rainbow Six.

FYI, ebola is an RNA virus, same as rhinovirus and influenza. That means it can mutate to spread by the aerosol/respiratory route. In fact, one sub-type did, in asia, however it was only lethal to monkeys.

yeah, good luck with that. Land borders are nonexistent in that part of the world. You would have to put the whole continent on quarantine, although that may not be a bad idea.....

ROSWELL, GA (CBS46) -
CBS46 News has confirmed the Centers for Disease Control has issued guidelines to U.S. funeral homes on how to handle the remains of Ebola patients. If the outbreak of the potentially deadly virus is in West Africa, why are funeral homes in America being given guidelines?

Ebola is pretty easy to contain apparently. It only spreads once you start exhibiting symptoms and is only spread by direct contact with bodily fluids. Washing your hands kills the virus (on your hands...hehe)

I think the UK already banned flights from Liberia.

Trudeau getting elected is still my no.1 worry.

Well I guess I'm glad I live in 1 of 4 cities in the US that have a hospital that have a specific ward for treating Ebola. It may only have 4 beds but its here.... Sounds exactly like the Flu thing at the beginning of this year, not enough vaccinations, end of the world blah blah blah. Unfortunately with how easy/fast you can travel internationally, you're going to have these problems. You can either stay at home and live in fear or go about your life. I know what I'm going to do, how about you?

When are we going to have the guts to close the borders to returnees or travellers from Africa? What will it take?

That's what it's looking like.

Awareness is key. Like ford said, do we have to run scared? No. Do we have to be aware? Yes.

There is a portion of the population in Canada that has family in west Africa. I wonder how much of a chore it would be to restrict travel to and from "hot zones"?

You think that's a good thing? Every case for hundreds perhaps thousands of miles around you will be coming to visit and infect your community.

Let's not forget, this isn't Africa on ANY level. I'm going to carry life on as usual and expect most of us are going to do the same .

Easy, we just need a large percent of the population to voice concern,a bunch of healthcare staff to state the obvious and lock up all the human rights lawyers, easy, lol

waiting for the pale horse

I think its a conspiracy, first cases hit NA, people rush to get vaccines that are not tested and that mutates, bingo bango zombies and death everywhere.

TBH I dont know what to think of it, but I will be prepared, whether its bugging out or bugging in we should all have supplies to last a few months while things equalize and quarantines to be lifted if something does happen, imagine if the food stops coming to the markets/stores... what now.

And does that thought scare me? Nope. I'm more worried about getting hit by a crazy truck driver than I am of Ebola. Even if this Ebola thing goes nuts in NA, if I were to get sick here at least I would have a team of DR's who knows how to treat it and has the facilities to treat it, as opposed to where ever you may live where the best DR you could come up with is still washing his hands from preg testing cows!

I highly doubt that. Even regular treatments such as IV fluids, electrolytes and clotting control you can reduce Ebola's mortality rate from 70-80% down to 30-40%. Not to mention a large majority of victims who receive treatment recover at clinics in Africa recovered. Either way when you compare general medicine and sanitary conditions here in NA to those in Africa who comes out on top? When you figure in those countries affected have how many millions of people living in poverty without access to health care and there have only been 3000 or so confirmed fatalities? I say again, I highly doubt that. You can be gullible and be a sheep following the media around like a damn fool. Hell according to the media last year the world was ending in all of Canada due to the flu outbreak around Christmas/new years. We see how far that apocalypse went....

I don't know what to make of it. Frankly I know we are more sanitary with better protections, but viruses mutate or evolve. No one really knows, and a person getting off a plane from Africa, going to a hospital , and then being released while having flu type symptoms is a bit alarming.

I guess pharmaceuticals stocks were huge. Wonder if there was a little inside trading?
