Default Got the short straw tonight

Got a call around 430 this afternoon that I needed to be in Assumption ASAP. First question was where the hell is that ??? Made it an hour out of GP and the snow started falling. Going to be a late night tonight ! So who has anything to tell me about Assumption ? Is it as bad as I have been told ?

It's.... Ummm... Well..... Its a special place, you aren't likely to find another like it.

May I ask what it is you are doing up there?

Default Assumption

The locals exacted tolls three times at the river bridge near Assumption late 80's working seismic , the little guy with the 30-30 lever was the negotiator the tolls where one sixteen inch spare tire, one forty eight inch jack all and six packs players light, glad they didn't want my MK II,s and Geo Gel , my party manager told the RCMP but they where not to be found , i am sure things are different now

A great place to visit, really a genteel and cultured place. Make sure and check out the local museum and art gallery while you are there. The locals are a really friendly bunch, happy to valet park your company vehicle, no tip needed.

I knew I remembered the name from somewhere and couldn't remember why until I looked at the map.

I thought Zama was bad, I get the impression Assumption is worse? Or is it pretty much one and the same?

Dunno what you are doing when you get there, but I hope you have accommodation arranged.

FYI it hasn't been called Assumption for a while now. The community changed its name to Chateh and people can take offense if you call it Assumption. There is still a rough contingent, as everywhere, but there are a whole bunch of family oriented, hard working folk too.

Obviously it's not a metropolis, but some of us actually like to live up north, not just drop in to make money, fish or hunt (no offense OP, not aimed at you)

I believe there is a community store again, and of course the RCMP are in Chateh. The federal nursing station has been downgraded and I don't think 24 hr emergency services are available anymore.

Bring a fishing rod, AB license, and enjoy yourself!

Zama is basically a work camp, assumption is a reserve.

Assumption is now Chateh. I worked in and around there for five years. Took my kids into town and shopped in the one grocery store. I bought some moccasins. I also bought a miniature birch bark canoe complete with paddles and a folded tanned squirrel hide. The artist's name is J. Ahnassay. (as written on the paddle).

The community has a bad reputation, some of it is justified, some isn't.

I don't think you will have any trouble unless that's what you're looking for.

This. Don't leave your truck unlocked, valuables in it or anything dumb that might get you broken into or punched in Edmonton, it will there. Be respectful, be tolerant if you run into drunks, and do your chit and get the hell out.

It's not a bad place really, it was much rougher in years gone by (RCMP chased out with Chainsaws, not a joke), but the same rules of working on any reserve apply.

Again:

Don't leave your truck unlocked with valuables in it, don't do something dumb that might get you punched somewhere else, it sure will there, be respectful, by tolerant if you run into drunks.... "Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy maaaaaaaan.." should not be responded to with omfg, get away from me, just be like hey guy and continue on your way, do what you need to do, enjoy a little fishing and get out.

I haven't spent time there. My wife was one of two Forest Officers in Rainbow, and spent some time there. Young white girl alone and she doesn't have any real horror stories.

I tend to think it would be a neat experience! Good lick! Enjoy it. Any idea how long you'll be up there?

Default Whoa.... Yikes..

Spent some time up there building and fixing houses.

Replaced the same front door 3 times cause the frame got busted by I don't know what..

Rough place back in the early 90s.

Didn't know about the name change.

Good luck man. Go with the flow.

walleye n pike. The reserve is along both banks of the river, but usually not a problem for a quick evening fish along the bank somewhere. Local knowledge and a boat or quad can improve the day considerably Best in early season/ high water, but there's no such thing as a bad day fishing.....

or if you can spare a few hours late season is best up around Steen R/Indian Cabins.

Go with the flow, I found the children and the elders understanding.

I did not look for conflict but did see were it could occur.

Be tolerant and don’t back down if you believe.

An elder could be anyone, but all elders should be receptive.

I did not know about the name change, but the air can be refreshing.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I arrived in town around 11:30 last night and was back on the road by midnight. Honestly after reading all the comments I was really hoping on being in town for a few days, I had my hinting gear with me and would have liked to have done some looking around and maybe found some fishing. Only people I ended up meeting were the on duty RCMP members as well as a very dirty but nice dog that wouldnt leave my side.
