Coal Lake Monster
Got up early this morning and went to coal lake for the first time. Arrived and the whole lake was covered in fog, burned off withing a few hours to reveal the perfect sunny day. Fished for a few hours and caught some small pike, I have a fish finder and it wouldn't show any fish in here the water is so filled with algae or whatever, even with the sensitivity set to 1 still nothing., so old school. Fish jumping all around all day, lake was like glass, starting to get hot. Phone rang, the wife was bitching about me being out fishing ( i left early while she was sleeping) rowing back to shore, ( i pick up my new boat wednesday thank god) about 3 feet of water. Had a 2 tailed white wiggler on I have had tons of success with. Rod bent, thought dam picking up the friggin weeds again. Hmm weeds don't pull the boat ( 4 man dingly from canadian tire) Wow , what the hell..... 10 - 15 minutes later this is what landed in the boat. Felt bad for keeping him but he was hooked through the eye. First fish I have kept all year, but he will go to good use. Going to put some onions and mushrooms in his belly and q him up! 96 cm not sure the weight, don't have a scale!

Agree on 8 to 10 pounds. I caught a 38" pike at Crane a few weeks back that was exactly 10 pounds on my digital scale. Looked a lot like this one; big head but a little thicker in the body. Still, real nice catch...congrats.

Big head and thin snake-like body usally means it's a male. They can get pretty much the same length as a female but rarely over 15 lbs.

Thanks
Thanks all for your comments, I felt pretty lucky, biggest pike I have ever caught, still feeding on him! Wife was so excited she called her sister over to see it, she forgave me when I brought this bad boy home, I am now called...fisher husband lol. Still get the adrenaline rush thinking about it, and that's what keeps me fishing! Picked up a Zodiak today and a 3.5 evenrude. No more rowing in a canadian tire dingy. Moving up to the big leagues...fish beware! Best part is, it's not always about catching (well mostly) it's about being outdoors, in nature exploring what Alberta has to offer. We only have a few months of summer so get out and enjoy. Now I have to start saving for ice fishing gear, hear it's a lot of fun?

I have seen your posts and know you have caught a lot of good sized pike. SO have i. I get spoiled at wab and my fishing partner has a digital scale. That fish is too skinny and doesnt have the width or depth to be 10. It has the length but unless the guy holding is an unsually large man his hands are give away on the weight. I find the width across the back to be the most telling sign of a 10 pound pike then the depth from top of the back to the bottom of the belly and finally the length. Just my opinion but i have caught at least 50 pike over 10 pounds and seen well over a 100 between the fish i have caught and those my fishing partners have caught. All but 5 have been at wab. Could it push 8? maybe but thats the top end and i doubt it. 6-8 is a fair range. 8-10 is not.
I used to over estimate the weight of all my pike until i started weighing big girls at wab. What i thought was a 10 pounder was actualy 5-6. My buddies 19lb 3 oz fish is the biggest pike i have ever seen if i didnt see its weight on a scale i would have guessed 30.
