Default Carry-on luggage restrictions

Going to be travelling across Canada on weather to fish the gaspe peninsula. Any experience taking a 4 piece rod as carryon, or do you always put your rods in your checked luggage. I'm considering travelling with a 4 piece 9.5 ft and a 11.5 ft switch for.

Never had an issue with this:

Won't fit your switch however.

I've had a ton of experience with carry on fishing stuff. Only trouble I've ever had was a few days ago in Ecuador. I've taken a rod that had a 36" tube length to Iceland and security (Edmonton airport) was cool with it. I really wouldn't be too worried about a domestic flight. Good luck
Ps. You are permitted to carry on flies as well, just the hook length can't exceed 6cm.

What was the "trouble" you speak of?!

My rod tube allows for my fly reel to be seated on the rod while in the tube. So I had a heavy-ish loop opti reel for this trip, and it apparently was too "club-like" to be safe for me to carry on (... yet they allow me to take pointy fishing pliers onto the plane). So I had to check the rod and reel last minute. Not a huge deal, but I was ****ting myself waiting for it to arrive at my next destination (since I had a overnight layover)

When I flew Westjet last year, I had my vest and reel in checked luggage, and carried on my rod in a tube. Zero problems with that. I've heard on other forums that some have had trouble with the reel & line, whether attached to the rod or not. I didn't even want to attempt the vest with all the gizmos and gadgets I have on it.

No problems, I've taken rods on planes with no case, with case and even a bunch of ice fishing rod and reels this last winter in a gun case. Although I wouldn't recommend the gun case I was able to take it right on the plane. Only two people asked what it was and I told them and they didn't even look.

I carry my fly reels in my carry-on and have had no problems in Canada, USA or Mexico. All other stuff goes in checked luggage but I have been told my smaller flies could also be carried on but why bother? The reels and lines are expensive and most easily damaged is why I carry them on.

I traveled to NZ in May and I packed all my gear plus most of my clothing (Bag inside the bag) into the Simms large duffle. The bag cinches up pretty good and I found it supper easy to travel with. Just keep it under the check bag weight and the rods in tubes.

I have the orvis version of this bag. It is over length according to the "rules", 31" > 24"

I just did a trip : YYC - Houston- Costa Rica, and previously YYC -Ottawa-Quebec City.

No one batted an eye. TSA, flight attendants, gate agents, no one even asked.

I can pack 4-5 rods, 4-5 reels, spools, extra line, pliers, camera, charge cords (get it yet? Tons of space) only thing I didn't pack in was flies.

It is hard, so if you had to gate check it, it wouldn't be a problem, as everything is safe inside. Carrying it around at airport was also a non issue with the shoulder strap.
