I don’t really follow hockey, and to my mind the Olympic has devolved into a contest of nations whereby the country with the most medals gets bragging rights. Fine, I suppose, but I had always thought that the Olympics was a gathering of the world’s finest AMATEUR athletes. Colour me naive, I guess.

Agreed! Now it’s just a money pit and bragging rights.

In 1986, professional athletes were given permission by the International Federation to compete in each sport of the Olympic Games alongside their amateur counterparts. However, two sports continued to resist the onset of professionalism in the Olympics. These are wrestling and boxing.

Currently anyone from the 2018 Junior team is not allowed to play for team Canada, so at this point Makar is out. Although, it has been confirmed he was not in London at the time of the event. I suspect that th people that were not involved will be allowed to play again, but not sure that will change before the legal proceedings have concluded. Which likely will not be before the 2026 Olympics.

What would be the Canadian lines?

My plan as coach

Line 1

Center McDavid
LW Brad Marchand
RW Mitch Marner
D Cale Makar
D Alex Pietrangelo

Line 2

Center Nathan MacKinnon
LW Jeff Skinner
RW Mark Stone
D Dougie Hamilton
D Josh Morrissey

Line 3

Center Braydon Point
LW Zack Hyman
RW Claude Giroux
D Aaron Ekblad
D Brandon Montour

Line 4

Center Matthew Barzal
LW Brandon Hagel
RW Jonathan Marchessault
D Noah Dobson
D Devon Toews

Subject to injury and performance in a couple years.

So many names left off the list.

Crosby maybe good to have involved with his Olympic experience however age is starting to be a factor.

Goal is winning so need to really balance each players pros and cons.

Pretty good list. Only change I’d make is keeping existing teammates on same line. Eg……mcdavid-Hymen.
Just because they don’t even have to look to know where the other one will be. They have already meshed.

Good point.
I’m guessing another factor to consider is who could use the experience in two years and will
Be around again in 6 years.

Marchand
Crosby
Stone
Peitrangelo
Giroux

Are all going to be a bit long in the tooth for the next winter games IMO.

Then there is kids like Bedard, Bouchard, Dach, and the other up and comers.

You’ve probably never seen an Olympic game of hockey then, when the NHLers participate. It’s pretty much as good as it gets, in my opinion.

I agree. I was just building a team based upon today but in two years… age and injuries will cause need for an update. Bedard depending upon how he progresses after jaw surgery will be interesting. Some kids don’t bounce back.

Could be some breakout players the year of the Olympics.

One thing for certain… Canada has extreme depth. Hoping formidable depth in the end.

I haven’t looked at US yet.

Sundance, what ever you are copying from is a lousy format for the forum, can you find a better format, it’s so hard to read, it’s a huge mess of text.

Nope. Couldn’t find something better.

Still. There is a number and name beside it. That’s what needs looking at. Ignore the rest.

I was wondering about that site. Has William Nylander as # 8 for Canadians. I think he will be playing Sweden!

He is a duel. So he could play for either. Guess it comes down to chance to win gold.

He was born in Calgary.

I can't see this happening, they would open themselves up to all kind of legal action, Makar was not even in London what grounds would they have to ban him from the Olympics

Once Hockey Canada has finished its investigation they have to reinstate players right to play for Hockey Canada if they are shown to be not involved.

That said the people that form the teams don’t have to pick them.

Expectations is Makar will be eligible.

Bigger question will come from has there been other incidents that will crop up.

https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/28...main-suspended

Hockey Canada Released a statement yesterday saying all players on that team are still suspended. This will likely remain in place until the court proceedings are completed. Those are rumored to be at least 2026.

makar has been admit, that he wasn't in London at the time, which should be pretty easy to prove. But it doesn't mean he didn't have knowledge of the event. Could have received pictures/videos. Could have been evasive with the police etc.

I suspect this will be in place until all trials are concluded. I would love to see Makar play in tbe Olympics. But we should have enough depth that a few people not being allowed to play shouldn't matter.

The biggest issue with Canada, is Goaltending.

There could be a lawsuit for millions, if he isn't allowed to play. Playing in the Olympics can bring endorsements, and not being allowed to play would deny him that opportunity.

Actually he is more valuable to companies for endorsements playing in the NHL, then the Olympics. Not sure if Bettman got a work around when he agreed for 2026 and 2030, but one of the biggest complaints about NHL players playing in the Olympics for the NHL is that they don't own the rights/footage or get any of the money, yet they shut down their season and risk injury to the stars.

It is why you very rarely see the Sydney Crosby golden goal highlight. Olympics has the rights to it.

There are people that watch the Olympics, that don't really care about the NHL, so it is another opportunity for exposure.
