My guess is bear...those marks are earily similar to the marks left by a grizz on a cow at the ranch in 310 I hunt. We know it was a grizz because it killed another cow a day later and fed on it for a few days so we had plenty of sightings to back it up. I'd be checking for tracks and scat, that will help solve the puzzle.

To me, that's a grizz, .......I've seen caribou more than once with all the rear hide peeled back and dangling, ......badly festered. If you've ever watched a bear try to pull anything down while chasing, this is the approach. The cow got away more than once going by the marks.
Now if that was a moose the bear would have a broken jaw quickly.

take your bear spray too

shoot straight

What would that accomplish? beside calling in whatever was handy? - he wants to know what killed his sheep and attacked his cow?

My point exactly and they still will have no idea what caused the damage?

It's not complicated. As i said in my first post the sheep are the tell if you have any carcasses but this may have nothing to do with the cow. You can rule out a cougar on the cow but definitely not on the sheep, they love them.

Ya i dont agree with these thoughts. If its a bear he isnt going to be running into an elk call when he kniws he just has to waddle over to the cattle.

He very probably would even if he were stuffed full, it's an instinctive reaction for predators to go after something in trouble. I've called animals off of kills and carcasses.
