I have been mentioning to anyone that will listen, that I want to take up bowhunting. I was told that this site would be a good place to look for info. So, first question, what is the must have equipment list for the starter?

Just kidding of course! Join a club (where do you live?), find a range, making friends is easy in archery. Find someone to talk to in your area, they'll get you going.

i assume you are interested in a compound bow? if so, you need to fund a bow that fits you well, a dozen arrows will get you started, a rest, sight and probably a release.there are lots of other gizmos and gadgets you will want as you progress. search other threads here using the words "new archery" and "getting started in archery" and you will find tons of good (mostly) advice. once you have some knowledge, then go to an archery shop and start asking questions. archery guys are for sure the friendliest group of guys when it comes to helping someone new. they will give you lots more advice, and then you can start shooting a few bows at the dealers to find out what fits you well and feels good. that matters more then what brand name is on it. welcome to archery and good luck.

Some good nadvice there, definatly if you are new, you'll need

-a bow
-arrows
-a rest
-sights
-release
Everything else is a luxury, and all depends on your funds. A quality bow shop will have some great deals on full set ups in the mid level range, as well as some great 2nd hand bows. No first time buyer needs a top of the line new bow, expecially if you don't know if you will actually enjoy archery.

Just bought my first set-up so i know how excited you are! There are guys on here with way more knowledge then me but here is what I bought I put in the low end cost of course the sky is the limit as far as spending goes!!

for starters:
-a bow $300 - $600 (++) for a bare bow you can spend almost 2 grand but for a first bow that would be very extreme, heck if you had been at it for many years that would be extreme
- a sight (3-5 pin) starting at $50
- a rest for the arrow to sit on/in, startin at $70
- a release starting at $30
- arrows fletched with field (practice) tips $8-$10 each, 6 is enough to get you going
- a case $50 you dont want your expensive nice new bow getting wrecked!

The above will get you started shooting, you could buy a package bow new (starting around $600) or used (there are a couple decent ones on here ready to shoot for $300 - $400)

Then to get you hunting you will need broadheads for your arrows ($30) and some kind of quiver ($60) to carry your arrows in while in the field.

My new package cost me just over $900 still have to get broadheads and a quiver before hunting season starts.

I do know what basics i need. I was more looking for scents, calls (deer, elk), camo, facemasks/ facepaint etc. What is necessary and what is just nice to have?

none of those things are necessary....but all of them are nice to have.

First you need to practice with your bow, then practice more, and when you have done that.... practice, practice, practice!!!!

the most important thing in your arsonal is confidence you will get when practicing.

Calls etc, are all relevent, and some work some don't. we have all spent the thousands of dollars in pursuit of our addiction. Watch some of the hunting videos and see what works for you.

I think a good place to start for determining the hunter gear requirements is to decide what species you plan to hunt and how you plan to hunt them. There is a big difference in the gear I use for Tree Stand Hunting vs Spot and Stalk or Still hunting on point etc.

Good camo including a face mask and light gloves are a must for any type of bow hunting.

Anyway think about how you want to hunt and what you want to hunt and let us know. I can respond in more detail at that point.
