Default Bull moose down on an antlerless tag.

Thought it was a cow until the ground check. It was with a massive bull that I hope makes it until next year. I spotted the pair while watching TV from my easy chair, threw on my coat and rifle, stalked the 300 yds and made a 75 yard high neck shot on the "cow". I guess that makes me an armchair hunter. The left side nubbin had a hook that was already starting to grow into the side of its head so probably a good genetic removal. Tenderloin in green peppercorn sauce and skirt steak fajitas.

And that is why tags are antlered, or antlerless. You will be eating well this winter.

It sure is nice when things come easy.......shot a cow moose on my place about 12 years ago and called it the "5 minute moose" because that's about how long it took.

Congrats on you moose and thanks for posting the cooked versions as well!!

Makes me wonder how I would pack that out on my back legally.

Not really an issue when you shoot in line of sight of your TV. That said, yeah you have to take the head.

You have to do more than that. The head needs to be attached to the tag somehow.

Good luck with that. This is why tags need to go on heads not legs.

Pics on a cell phone with the date, etc and tag. Leave the head - if they want to see it give them the coordinates .

Moose in the freezer or the frying pan always a 'recipe' for success. Well done!

I shot a button Buck once on an antlerless tag.

I had hoped on quartering out any deer I shot and packing it out that way. I was forced to drag that stupid thing 2 miles through the dirt to keep it whole.

No it doesn’t. You need to read the regulations Chuck.

Why?
I'm sure the buttons were less than 4".

I shot an elk a few years back the same way. Just left head attached to front 1/4 till we processed it. Not a big deal but it was a good bonus.

I think he's suggesting that, not saying that's what is required as of right now. He makes a valid point, if the tag is based solely on the antler requirement shouldn't the tag be attached to the portion of the animal with or without the antlers? Not everyone hauls the animal whole to their truck/ residence. I certainly wouldn't bother packing the head of an antlerless animal back to the truck if I didn't have too.

Neither would I.
The regs clearly and specifically state that the head of a calf moose must remain with the carcass. Not connected to the tag, which is what Chuck was saying.

Are you talking about taking a calf on an antlerless tag or the special calf moose tag?
I can see it fir the special calf moose tag , because it requires a firs year calf.

Good point. Retaining the head with the animal only applies for the calf moose license.

A calf taken on an antlerless licence, male or female, only requires that the evidence of sex be attached to the same piece of the carcass as the tag. In that case the head can remain in the field.
