Default Roll Back Thursday record Pike

Roll Back Thursday

1985 Mar 1 .... 1 pm ....–23 .. on and off snow all day.. Fickle Lake Alberta

went on lake with pick-up got stuck just 100 yards out .. took 45 minutes to get truck off lake

Walked back out 200 yards from boat launch

Fishing in 6 fow .. with a smelt and leader with 2 trebles on 15# line

left it sitting 2 ft off bottom

had something take line and stop about 20 ft ..got ready to set hook

started taking line again and I set hook

Wow fast run ..omg very fast line not coming off spool fast enough as spool came off ice up to mitts

knocked down to ice and kicked it out on ice as it spun off line

zoom right back at feet spitting off line as fast as it could

omg how much line left better tug a bit to slow run

then a stop ..wow what a run

started tightening line by pulling ..omg not moving ..tighten again nothing ..just kept tightening and letting of pressure

arm getting tired .. switch arms ..did this for 20 minutes ..nothing omg

then started getting line back .. and more and more ..line laying on ice lots

omg saw head ..legs shaking .. Buck fever ..shaking ..called Brother in-law to look

fight is on .. line stuck in ice .. got it off .. Pike on other side of hole did that 6 or 7 times

leading it in towards 10 inch hole ..refusal .. tried again refusal .. bring it in faster refusal

run omg .. big loop with a knot down hole .. got to get that back .. wow got knot back on ice with loop .. I thought don’t let her have that much line again

fight in too 50 minutes .. refusal after refusal .. bring her in faster ..leading her to hole ..lifted head ..into hole backed out

bring her faster into hole .. came half way up .. and a wag of her tail with my up pressure .. up she came head out of water mouth open

oh sh*t brother in-law ..I grabbed and threw out on ice ..letting a prime-evil yell go

Big fish ..big fish brother in-law

lets go as I grabbed sled and threw her into it but she was hanging out and started running for truck

came back getting more equipment and heading for truck

Had too get to a certified scale quick before she loses any weight

did a bit of fishing tailing out to hi-way 47 then into Edson too grocery store and scale .. 32.5 ..got names and ph numbers of witness’s

Picture taken by local Newspaper .. off the the Fishing Hole as they had a contest ..biggest to Alberta Record for the month would win $100 gift certificate

found out about World Record keeping Clubs in Florida and Hayward Wis .. ice fishing was only in Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward Wis

so I contacted them and got forms sent took to Canada Fisheries Bio David Donald with my 12#13 oz Brook Trout and got both recognized as WR

Northern Pike ice fishing and Brook Trout 8# line class WR’s

Pike was 47 inches with a 26 1/2 inch girth

Northern Pike was 32#5oz and lasted to 2006 Mar 11 when it was broke from Fickle by Local Hinton Master Angler Gerald Tkachuck at 33#2oz

Memories are lasting a life time

Wow what a fight

Sweet!!!!

enjoy

David

That's a great memory! The way you described the fight with that Pike, I feel as though I was standing right there beside you.

Thanks for sharing.

I have personally seen a monster pike come out of that lake back then too. Guy filleted it on his tailgate because his buddy had caught one a couple pounds bigger. He had caught a smaller pike when the big one took it. We were on the lake at the time and watched them chasing the big pike around with the boat hooting and hollering. He was the talk of the campground. I have a picture of him holding up the pike and it on the tailgate. It was in the 30 lb range.

I even have an news article about a WR pike caught at Fickle Lake. I will have to check the name.

I camp there all the time, been going there since i was a baby. Thanks for posting Speckle. Congrats on a wicked fish.

Pretty neat trip down memory lane. Quite an achievement to have had not only one, but two world records.
As years have gone by, did the ins. estimate of your trophies go up, or down, and do they lose value when they become 2nd place?

Thanks all

I have thought about that too for insurance reason's and I would think the Pike may have gone down a bit but maybe not as the Brook Trout is number 2 in record books and I would think it has gone up

oh by they way I have had/still 14 World Record line class/tippet/ice fishing and 2 are pending in IGFA

we all have those special memories in our lives I enjoy sharing mine

Remember records are there too be broken

Have a Great Ice Fishing season All

David
