Default Photo radar changes

When are the changes to phot radar supposed to take effect. I though that in December 2022 they where supposed to have high visibility wraps on the photo radar vehicles. Airdrie RCMP are still using a white pickup and a blue pickup without any signage.

I've seen a few of the high visibility photoradar vehicles in Calgary in the last couple of weeks.

People will still complain about photo radar. Only now they'll say their wasting too much money on the "wraps".

They are.

There should be no vehicles to even wrap.

How would you like to see speed enforcement done?

How about regular patrols? If the speeding is such a big deal to require regular enforcement then it should have active patrols, not passive tax collectors. It’s likely not serious enough to justify dedicated patrols though.

Would a person want the demerits also?

Also tax increase to pay for the new officers and equipment.

Start by increasing the speed limits, we need less speed enforcement and more Police working on actual crime, not Cash cows.

Also, All traffic tickets/driving infractions, the Amount should be able to be given to a Charity or specific Government agency/ affiliate EX The Alberta Conservation association.

Here in Edmonton all the vehicle's were changed about a year ago. Most are bright yellow and if they are not, then they have Hazard signs, 10' flags, and safety cones on the road...they stick out really easily now.

I would say things are changing...a couple of years I would drive by at least 4 a day now maybe 1 day if I was lucky. Instead I have seen a huge increase of EPS pulling people and giving out tickets. Only time I see a lot of photo radar is on the Anthony Henday on weekends.

Why does everyone treat the arbitrary speed limit laws as something so sacred?

By actual police pulling people over when they are speeding. A ticket in the mail 2 weeks later does nothing.

Generally, I dislike photo radar. But I do think that it has its place.

I'm sure many on this forum know of streets in residential areas where drivers travel at an excessive rate. I would say that it's pretty easy to have your speed increase from 50 to 55..... a quick check of the speedo and most will ease off. But the drivers who travel at 30% over the limit can get ticket after ticket and I would not care.

There are too many dangerous drivers on our roads. More enforcement by officers is needed, but photo radar can have its place.

You think 55 is excessive?

You obviously havnt been driving North on Henday from Hway 16a towards st.Albert trail… I drive this road every day, and there is a photo radar truck sitting on the overpass over the Yellowhead Trail shooting pics in both directions. You can’t see the decals but you can see the small red flag… this tactics (overpass parked vehicles shooting down on Henday) is used all the way to Manning freeway crossing…

The logic of photo Radar is safety on urban short trips, any time saved would be mere minutes at best, chronic speeding is more of an illness or an illusion of saving time.

Or up to the speed limit.

There should also be a minimum speed limit on all 4 lane highways.

Mac - I believe Big Sky is referring to 55 in a residential, and that speed IS too fast. Down south the residential speed limit in a few cities is 40 km/hr, which I believe is what all residential streets should be.
That is a different topic than photo radar...so on with the show!

I only drive that section on the weekends and that is where I see most of photo radar trucks as per my comments. Used to see 2 or more a day on the Whitemud but that has back off to 1 a day now.

Speed limits on many roads are artificially set too low, and people drive as fast as they generally feel safe. That's why on the QEII, or #1 highway most people are speeding. Municipalities benefit from speeding enforcement ($$$) so why would they change that?

I agree with this. I know someone who is a RCMP officer and he told me that you're more of a hazzard driving 10 k under the speed limit than driving 10 k over

Agree whole heartedly with this one-drivers that impede traffic are a huge safety problem and law enforcement should be going after them.

Careful what you ask for boys. The places I have seen with a posted minimum it was something like 70 for a highway with a max of 100. If they posted a minimum of 80 on the QE2 would you all stop kvetching about someone doing 100?
