Grizz or Black bear track?
It was a large track. In my opinion it's a big black bear. The pads are more curved and the claw marks aren't far enough away to be a big grizzly in my opinion.
Roast me if I'm wrong.
Appreciate all input.

Easy way to tell griz from black bear. Start with claws are they more than 1-1.5” from top of the toes? Then draw a straight line across all toes. If it’s a griz the pinky toe will always be in a line with the rest of the toes. Black bear pinky toe will always be under the line. Finally there is a small triangle section of fur that goes into the hind pad that is not present on grizzly paws. In tracks it shows as a blurred out section compared to the other portions of the feet.

That's exactly why I think this is black bear. The foot that's next to it was partially covered with snow. Please don't judge off of size. The straight line trick shows the last toe well below which tells me it's a black bear. There are some massive black bears in alberta. A grizzly would have claws well beyond where they are on this track.

It's also a front track not rear. I can't tell if the picture is not as good resolution because I posted it or not, but you can see it's a front track. All the stuff in behind is scuffed snow.

Mud and snow can do funny things to tracks, something to keep in mind and mountain grizzlies may have shorter claws.
My neighborhood.
Grizz

My 'rule of thumb' if the track is bigger than my size 12 boot track, it is a grizzly.

That's a Grizz.
Beside the size, which would be a very rare anomaly for a Black Bear
It easily passes the line test as a Grizz.
The claws only appear short because the track is in soft snow.
Those claws went much farther under the snow.
Everything I see says it is a Grizz, and everything I see says it is Not a Black.

I honestly still think it's a black bear. I can't stress enough how going off of size is wrong. The footprint next to it clearly has snow over the toe and sides of the boot.
They don't poke their feet into the snow, they set them down. It doesn't pass the line test at all. The last toe is almost completely below it.

I know the lines not perfect but take a straight edge to it.
The picture of the grizzly track is larger, but clearly indicates what it should look like as a griz.
