Dogs ear won't stop bleeding
My boxer Mya and Dane Anna got in a fight and Mya got a 1" split in her ear. Direct pressure for awhile with paper towel stops the bleeding for a bit then we bandage with blood stop and gauze wrapped around her head but she shakes it off and starts the bleeding again. Anyone have an awesome trick that can help?

Clean it out really well, then use Krazy glue - just enough to close the wound and try to avoid the hair as much as possible. I've used it on myself in the past on cuts that should have been stitched, works great.
edit: Kurt beat me to it.

I've used it on myself and it works awesome, especially on those damn cuts on your finger tips.

Great trick that works every time: Take her to the vet to get stitched up. Soon (like now) and then make sure she wears a cone.

Just don't glue your fingers to the dog's ear as you are waiting for the glue to set. That would suck.

Thanks all, a bit of crazy glue tonight and tomorrow morning take her in for some stitching and a hood ornament (cone).

My dog had the same issue when a friendly dog bit his ear. Took him to a vet and he used crazy glue but it took a few tries to get the bleeding stopped. He said the ear is hard to stitch so that is why they used the glue. Then a shot of antibiotics in the butt to finish the job. He did not need a cone as he could not lick his own ear.

Wasn't crazy glue developed in Vietnam for wounds?

If it won't stop bleeding it could have nicked or severed a vien in which case take him to the vet. Crazy glue would be a bad idea if this were the case. In my opinion anyways.

If pressure stops it rather quickly, then it's likely not a vein or artery. Doctor will likely glue it up anyway.

Ears bleed profusely on anything from dogs to livestock to people.
This is my two cents. Take it to the vet unless you can do a good running stitch on dog shaking his head every second cuz it hurts something awful.
From past experiences as recent as a couple months ago. No amount of pressing bandage or glue is gonna close up a 1" gash.
Pay to vet and cut the top off an old straw cowboy hat as a cone for the hound. Works every time for us.

Hope this is allowed, but I haven't gone for stitches in years. Cut my thumb open to the bone a few years back with a broken whisky glass, could lift the flap and see the joint. This is what krazy glue looks like once applied to a fresh wound, but it took a couple of applications to close it. Blood doesn't seem to bother the glue. No sting, no pain - keep some with you in case. Healed nicely, really have to look to find the scar.

I've "fixed" some pretty nasty cut on myself with crazy glue.
The last time I did it my wife insisted I go to the hospital anyway.
We did and the Dr told me if the crazy glue works then stitches
would only make the scar worse. He did give me a shot though.
No pics but it was from a 4 1/2 cutting disk blew apart and stuck
itself about half way into my thigh.
I just dumped a bottle of hydrogen peroxide on/in it and glued it shut.

Try chemically cauterizing the wound to stop the bleeding before super glue.
The item you need is a Styptic Pencil. It's sold in drugstores to stop minor cuts from shaving. Just wet it with water and rub it on the cut. Bleeding stops, clean it after 5 minutes with alcohol, then superglue it.

No - it was developed so you could stick your hard hat to a steel beam and hang off it.

You live in Edmonton and so do I! I've got a hard hat and a bottle of crazy glue.
C'mon over and we'll try it out.
I don't drink anymore so you'll have to be the one to try it.

Heh? A cone so she doesn't lick her ears? That'd be some flexible dog. Or one with awful long ears.
are you a vet by chance?

Make it a really high steel beam and I'll come for the show too.

Cones serve more purpose than just licking.

Don't need to go to vet school to know that a dog can scratch her ear with her hind foot. (at least I don't)

Attilathecanuk, how did you end up making out with this?
Ear cuts can be a real nightmare. My dog had the tiniest knick on the tip of her ear, in the worst possible spot. Got bopped by a jerk of a cat. It honestly looked about as harmless as a paper cut, but was a gift that kept on giving. I needed to make her a babushka to keep the ear/bandage in place. Otherwise any time she shook her head it looked like a murder scene on my walls and ceiling. Crazy glue didn't work. Second skin didn't work. Wish I would have had some styptic around to try.

Styptic will stop the bleeding but wont close the cut.You will end up with a notch in the ear.

This for sure, problem solved with no risk to the dog seems like a no brainer to me.

For the injury described, this is the only solution that will stop bleeding and heal the ear. Not only will the ear look better it will be less prone to future injury.

We kept It bound and bandaged all night and in the morning let the vet see her. The first aid we gave her was a job well done and the cone went on for a day. Now her ear looks great and doesn't bother her at all. Thanks to all for the help!!
