Default Rem. 700 heavy barrel variant

Hi guys. First post here.

I'm in the market for a Remington 700 variant in .308 with a heavy contour barrel. Whether it be a P, PSS, Varmint etc. I'll probably be looking to re-stock it later (dare I say McMillan?), but in the meantime, what are opinions or even other Remington models that fit those specs? This gun will be for target and hunting. If I start modding, it'll be a couple years out I expect, so I'd like something that will still satisfy in the meantime.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Good rifles to build up and customize. Not the most optimal twist rate and for hunting they are god awful heavy. Generally fairly accurate but don't expect to shoot heavier than a 168smk. If you want real accuracy you best handload for your guns. Now if it was a strict target rig go for it but since you want dual purpose I would go for a tikka t3 lite. IMO of coarse. Welcome to the forum.

I was looking for something similar.
I thought, buy a rem 1000$, new stock 800$, bed it etc 100$...
I bought a kimber Longmaster instead for 1800$
Medium heavy barrel, nice action, pillar bedded walnut.
I posted this before but you will see it is twice the gun a rem is.
Dale at Shooters Choice was great to deal with also.
Another option if you can find one is a sako 75 or older.
I don't like the HS stocks that come with the rem police, 5r models
Good luck in your search

HOWDY and welcome !
Although a not Remington fanatic, there is no denying the endless options for as far as modifying goes, ad they are danged accurate for the most part in stock trim.

Yeah, I'm thinking Remington for modding. A full blueprint and lapping job would happen so I'm not concerned. I'd like to go the M40A1 route with it. Not uber clone with the mst scope though. I'm not rich enough for that. But maybe a 1:10 24" barrel down the road too.

Anyone have a 5R Milspec? Not a fan of SS guns, but it's got a nice stock and a barrel I like.

I had one. Super accurate. Should have kept it, but alas that is an all too common refrain in my life

I had one. It was very accurate but there were a couple of things I didn't like. The grip on the stock was very thick. I could see how the palm swells might allow a consistent hand filling hold but shooting it with gloves was a no go for me. The barrel is very heavy and slinging it on the shoulder was annoying as the muzzle always seemed to tilt back.

At the time I thought I could use it for a hunting rifle that I might also use to get into some precision shooting eventually. I decided to sell it and used the money to partially pay for a couple of other rifles.

If you aren't looking for the 5R to do double duty as a hunting rifle, it might be what you're looking for.

When I see that silly triangular barrel with the stupid ports, I have to fight the urge to throw up in my mouth.

Don't fight the urge, and we will all feel better.

What are these 700's selling used for these days? I'm seeing a few pretty close to retail, but they have accessories.

Having a heavy barrel for hunting is going to get old in a hurry for you, if you are doing a lot of walking/hiking. I at one time had a heavy barrelled varmint Model 700 in .22-250, with the laminate thumbhole stock. Very accurate. I managed one season hauling that pig around looking for coyotes. Now I have a Winchester Model 70 featherweight. Much better. Dual purpose target/hunting is going to be a conflict for you I think, you may be better off deciding what your primary shooting is going to be for now, and meet that particular criteria first, and save up for a second rifle down the road for the other application. And, that way you'll have two rifles!

Thanks. I'm definitely open to hearing from those who have hunted with a heavy gun. I've hunted for years with a lighter iron sights 30/30 bolt, but that gun lives with my dad 1000 miles away now. I figure that with around a week of rifle season per year, and the odd varmint shoot, using the heavy barrel gun would be a nice hobby gun for target shooting, since I live 5 minutes down the road from the local range.

What do the 5r milspecs run used these days for just the rifle? I see em for sale, but most have accessories included. Not that it's a deal breaker, but I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect to spend.
