Default 25hp Honda wont start... but runs great.

OK, the title is a little confusing.

When I shoot a little gas in the cyliner it starts right up. Once warm the motor will start and run and start again. If I leave the motor for a few days (or even overnight) it will NOT start on it's own, I have to spray a bit of fuel in the cylinders again.

Any suggestion? I have a new fuel line and bulb but it never seems to get completely hard. Especially after I pull it over, the bulb can be squeezed again and again.

Make sure you squeeze your bulb in a vertical not horizontal way,, or rather, the way a football looks standing end to end.

Also make sure your hose is in the correct orientation. The flow arrowshould be away from the tank and toward the motor. If you dont have an arrow just try reversing the hose connections and try priming again.

you probably have a defect in your fuel line. The check valve in the bulb often wears out

Thanks guys. I have NOT tried the vertical priming but will. bulb is new (does not eliminate the possibility it is defective) but I will maybe replace it anyway to see if that cures the problem.

My Honda Foreman had a similar issue last fall. Turned out to be a plugged jet. It must not of been plugged too bad, just a little varnish. I pulled the carb and cleaned the jets out (amazing the YouTube videos you can find) and it started right up.

After two years of frustration with my Honda outboard, pulling the cord till I was near passed, bobbing around in the middle of the lake with the cover off and plug out, and embarassing myself cussing a blue cloud - I found that my Honda had an extremely precise throttle setting for start-up. Now that I know exactly where to set the throttle, it starts first time, every time.

Thanks again everyone. I will sure post on boats too.

pulled gas line past the fuel pump and fuel was getting through the pump on prime so SamSteel might be onto something with a jet plugged and not letting fuel into the cylinder (however it gets there on prime). I just paid for a carb cleaning so I was hoping that wasn't it.

Well, at least I know how to get it going for now if I feel like pulling the cover and plugs.

My first guess is a blockage in the enrichment circuit of the carb. Second thing to look at if that doesn't help would be a intake valve clearance. If they are too tight it can cause this problem.

Is say the issue is in the carb not the primer bulb. I had a similar problem and it ended out that my carb was all gummed up with deposits. Its that damn ethanol they put in our gas these days....makes a mess out of carbs if it sits too long. try running some sea foam through it.

Hi all, thought I should update.

So, the motor was serviced prior to getting it and it seems the choke linkage was improperly hooked up. The choke was basically afunctional. Once I finally stumbled on this and hooked up the connecter bar in the right place my problem went away.

Thanks for the help problem solving!
