It's tough to start off in the winter, but I'd totally recommend getting a Barry Mitchell's Alberta fishing guide (can purchase at Canadian tire or and fishing shop) and search up the lakes closest to Edmonton. After you find a few lakes, ask away online (like here).
Although don't do Beaumont pond, it's fished out. My recommendations would be wabamun lake for being close to Edmonton. Let us know how you do!

I'll check that out! Yeah I never even thought about buying a fishing guide. I've been in Saskatchewan so long if I had to buy a guide I'd be laughed at!

Any idea on ice thickness at Wabamun? Might be a silly question considering how cold it's gotten here lately, but it'd be nice to know. I can never get on comfortable with driving out on ice for any less than 20 inches, if I'm going to drive out there at all. Are there any laws against driving out on ice in Alberta?

Download the ifish app, make up a username and ask away, Ice reports are usually pretty good, some BS on there too, nobody wants to tell you the secret spots but it will help out

Just wait for this cold snap to end and you will have your 20 inches
Should be getting up there now.

Last week wab had 16-18” about 300yards off shore near the sailing club. Fishing was great for 14” walleye, one after another on a slip bobber and a minnow. The bobber out fished me 4-1 so bring a dead stick rod!! There is an ice ridge right out from the sailing club, if you follow it east for
About 100yards you will line up with a point. That is where I was fishing..... it’s a place to start if your new to the lake or decide only to walk out.

Don't forget to check the fishing regulations for each area/lake. For example, Wabamun is zero keep for all species so catch and release only.
