Default Number of Suffield Hunters this year

After checking the draw summary reports this year, I noticed a big change to the way they distributed the antlered and antlerless elk tags for the on the base hunts. Each of the eight 4 day hunts, there will be 60 antlered hunters and 40 antlerless hunters both hunting at the same time (as well as the first nation hunters if they get invited again this year). I drew a first week antlerless elk license so I know it comes with 2 tags like in the last two seasons, and I am guessing the antlered hunters will have 1 tag each like previous years (potential harvest from licensed hunters is 1120 elk). I like this split as there will be a lot fewer hunters targeting the cows and pushing them around. Might have a higher success rate at hunters filling both tags and ultimately lowering the herd size. I have been on this hunt a twice as a hunter and helped 10 others with there's for a total of 4 bulls and 8 cows. It is definitely not the most challenging hunt but those prairie elk sure do taste good. Good luck to all this upcoming season. Be safe and straight shooting.

My kids have cow tags for later dates. How did you find out how many tags they get?

there was an article from a newspaper down south that said only 800 tags were issued. It quoted a bunch of ranchers who were right freaking angry at the low number of tags.

I checked out the RELM website tonight and under my antlerless elk draw for the first Suffield hunt (Nov 13-17), it shows 2 tags available. I do not have any blank tags to fill out so I will head to Crappy Tire tomorrow and buy my tags. I am pretty well positive that I will get 2 tags. I will re post once I have them. According to the 2017 draw summary report, there is 8 weeks of hunting on the Suffield base. 60 Antlered tags a week and 40 antlerless tags a week for a total of 800 tags. If I am correct and each antlerless hunter gets 2 tags then there will be 1120 tags

Don't shoot the messenger ......... apparently there was a glitch in the system that has been fixed. When I logged into AlbertaRelm site yesterday there were two spaces available in my account under Antlerless Elk, this morning there is only one. Anyone who was issued two tags will be contacted.

suffield hunt must have been a successful hunt last year as there was 100 hunters ( 200 tags a week ) last year and only 40 per week with 40 tags this year probably the difference was opening the NWA

You are correct, I did not have time to get my tags the other night but logged in today and sure enough they got rid of the second tag. One elk is still enough for my family but two would have let me share with my non hunting family. Hopefully I get a moose in the bow zone as well to share in the harvest.
