Default Flying USA with firearm and ammo

I m going to Maui for goat and maybe more(not guided)
West jet spec that “ammunition must be securely packaged and packed separately from firearm, however it is permitted to be transported within the same container”
Does it mean I can have ammo in an ammo case in the same hard case as firearm?
Thx
Frank

Make sure you get to to the airport 4 hours ahead of departure. The American's are very good if your papers are in order. I have never transported my ammo with my firearm.
Play it safe and store your ammo in some kind of a travel container and make sure when you get to the counter that the first thing you say is, "I'm traveling with a firearm."
Get it out in the open right at the outset. Typically they dont know what to do with you and this can lead to delays.

Put gun in hard case. Put ammo in separate CHECKED bag. This works on every airline and in every airport. Putting it in the case with the gun may work sometimes and may cause you big grief other times.

Put the ammo in with your checked luggage in a locked case. Do not put any firearms parts in with it. (Spare mags, etc). Lock the gun up in it’s hard case and you’re good to go. If you informed west jet that you’re travelling with a firearm that’s good but they’ll still have no idea what to do when you get to the airport. It takes time. Make sure your keys or whatever you locked your stuff with is accessible because you will have to unlock it and put paperwork in with your ammo and rifle. Again DO NOT store any ammo in with your firearm. Good luck and be patient and stay calm with them lol.

Last month, I flew with a firearm and ammunition to South Africa via Air Canada / South African. For a lockable ammo container, I used a plastic pistol case, got it from Tradex for around $11. Worked fine, it easily holds 2 factory boxes of 20, the ammo was never checked, was never asked to open the locked ammo case. I cant comment on USA requirements.
