From my limited experience they like lower, flat, forested areas, poplars (and I've heard dogwood). My spots have always been close to water and the right moisture level to grow some moss. When I see moss and rotting wood I slow down and start looking more closely.
Interesting, I was up high on a south slope in the mountains.
