I picked an ice cream pail full last evening in less than an hour. I find them in treed cow pastures. They seem to like a fair bit of shade but on low laying ground. I was picking the short black ones and also quite a few of the tall brown ones.

If there is a symbiotic relationship between the poplar trees and morels can I tell which tree is infected just by looking at it?
Not the tree it self. One the ground in a Poplar bush. Getting late....grass is growing where I was to day. Didn't find any. This was up near Athabasca.

As has been said already, forest fire burn area's. when you find quite a few in a given area, do you pick them all or do you leave some for future growth? I always leave one here and there. I used to have a piece of land just out of town and lots of people would pick there. They would take everyone they found. Now there's very few there if any.

Default morels

ah. that woody, nutty flavor . my mouth is watering . if you never tried morels you're missing out. ( no matter how they look ) . found some on the forestry trunk road west of sundre . don't get out as often as i'd like . true they only last a few weeks in the spring. you can find them dried in some grocery stores @ $16.00 an ounce. lucrative buisness in southern B.C. for a few weeks. just google morels and follow the numerous links.

Do you guys think that next weekend should be ok to find them still? And by the way, congrats on your finds guys, pretty mouth watering.

Cabot.

It all depends on how much undergrowth is coming up and if you can still see rotting leaf matter. I live in the mountains, so if I make an elevation change i could probably find morels at the end of June and early July.

Default watch the dandelions

When the dandelions are out...that's when the Morels start growing....
A fresh rainfall this time of the year follwoed by warm sunshine is the recipe for growth.
I always look in the bush that's been overrun with cattle and has alot of poplar deadfall.

Default Morels

We follow the snowline up the slopes along cut blocks and old burns around our place (S. of Revelstoke) We find them from late April until mid June. 10-20 days after the snow melts out from the shadows. The trick with all mushrooms (other than not eating poison) is knowing the season that they grow in, hitting Chantrels and Lobsters in peak season is Great.

Used to pick all sorts of them for my parents in the Sherwood Park area.
The places I picked at are now all built up but if you go to the Blackfoot reserve east of Sher.Pk. or to the Ministik grazing reserve s.e. of S. Cooking Lake you should find all sorts. Also used to find them along the N. Sask river between Sher. Pk. and Ft,Saskatchewan while looking for arrowheads.Don't know about access though. The Ministik and Blackfoot are public. Should be lots of puffballs as well, but they show up later.
I don't think the morels are out yet do to this late spring.

Well, Ken07AOvette(aka 3shots) at least I don't personally keep the Federal ammunition factory in business like someone who will not be named, but owns a Corvette.
We best not hijack the thread.
Do try Ministik , there are plenty of Morels there. Maybe 20sq. miles in area.

Axe.....been thinking about it myself. But the cold below 0c nights up to a few days ago, and the dry ground, I don't think they are up yet ?
(you live to the east of me about 45-60 minutes ?)

Forecast today is for rain/showers. Then the rest of the week fairly warm. About Wed. I'll start looking.

Tight cuffs and bug repellent for ticks !

I think you are right on with your assessment, Reeves. Me and the wife went for a hike in Blackfoot grazing reserve yesterday and didn't see any. It is terribly dry and the grass is barely poking up in the bush. I am going to wait for a rain and try again. Keep us posted when you see them. Thanks.

Too windy to put up vinyl on one of my Pheasants "houses" so went for a long (about 4-5km) walk. Was looking for mushrooms (none) and Fox/Coyotes (none) and sheds (none).

"They" are calling for rain Thurs. Fri. and Sat. After that I'm sure they'll pop up !

Default morel mushrooms

Good to see someone brought this up from last year. I was going to post this again this year. I was doing some hiking with the family and keeping an eye out for some morels this past weekend, had zero success. I think you guys are right with it being to early with the late spring and some moisture and heat may be all it might take in the next week or so.

Default Morels

Used to pick these in Illinois while studying there. Have yet to find one in Alberta. Had a little rain here in Calgary along with warmer days and hope that might push some up.

Going to try the river bottoms tonight. Any reports from others are appreciated.

Ken

Has anybody tried the mail order kits to grow Morels? There are a few if you fire up the Google? They run about 30 bucks, and the ad says they are guaranteed to produce, but can take up to 2 years to produce. So I'm not sure if its a solid George Foreman guarantee, or a sketchy Tommy Callahan take a dump in a box guarantee.
