I mainly want pictures of bucks and so I most often set up the cam looking at a scrape. Scrapes are usually located along trails that bucks use so even when the rut is over it is a good place to have a cam set up.
Some guys will put bait out and have a camera on it. The trouble with that is you can get 75 pics of the same hungery doe eatin.
When I set up looking at a trail I try to be sure the animals cannot move through quickly and set the cam off after they are gone or mostly gone.
I learned some of this the hard way:
One day I was setting a cam on a trail and I happened to be sucking on a scotch mint. I chewed it a bit and spit it out on the trail. Got lots of pics of deer smelling the ground in that spot.
