Default If you had 5oo bucks for a scope

If you had 500 bucks to put a new scope on your 7mm, what would you buy?
I have an elite 3200 2to7by40 but i want to see a little more of the world. Any expert advice would be appreciated.

For less than $500,I would simply move up to a 3x9x40 elite 3200.

Bushnell 4200 2.5x10x40's are usually just under $500 and one of the better scopes in that price range.

You can't go wrong with the Bushnell Elites! With the Canadian dollar recently gaining on the American I am pretty certain I saw a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5X10X40 in and around the $500 range. If I'm not mistaken, I think you can pick up a 3200 for around $300? Good luck. Regards, Mike

I just bought a zeis conquest from the U.S last year for $589. If you put in another few dollars and order it off e-bay or from the U.S you will be better off.

I think you could find a Leupy VXIII 3.5-10x40 if you looked around a bit for right close to that price online or from the US....that would be my choice...

For $50 more I'll sell you a brand new 4200 2.5-10x50.

If I had $500 and a couple cases of beer I would indeed buy what Sheep has for sale.

Bushnell 4200 2.5-10x50 or even a 40mm

I stay away from 50mm and larger objectives since I find that I have to mount them too high to obtain a proper cheek position on the stock.

That really depends on the rifle. I know I've got a couple on rifles that I own that are mounted with medium rings and the eye position is no higher than with a 42mm scope. Some rifles do require higher rings but some stocks also require a higher cheek position. That's a pretty blanket statement to make. Each rifle/scope combination is as individual as the shooter and should be set up accordingly.

Yes it does depend on the rifle and on the mounts.Using leupold mounts on my rifles,I can get by with medium rings for the 42mm objective, but I need to step up to high rings with most 50mm scopes.I have found this to be the case with all of my rifles and with most bolt actions that I have used.I do use butler creek lens caps on all of my scopes which can also be a factor.

True and I have a pair of Vari-X Leupies that are 3.5x10x50 MHD on my spare pair of P-64 Mod. 70 Alaskans in .338. I seldom ever even fire these and they are in Rimrock stocks, so, the higher mounting works OK, but, generally I dislike 30mm tubes and objectives over 40mm.

My choice for this query, save a few bux more and buy a Zeiss Conquest 3x9, the best value in a scope I have seen in years. I have West German Zeiss scope and the difference in optical quality is miniscule, while the eye-relief is MUCH better....it's better than my Leupies and B&L Elites, too, a real deal.

Kutenay...asked this on another thread but in case you missed it...I'm curious why you don't like the 30mm tubes?

Elite 3200's in a 3x9-40mm Generally run at $249.99

I was looking at that scope SH was selling, thinking it would go great on the VSSF II but decided on a 40mm in silver

Nikon for me, it just smoked the Zeiss Conquest and Leupold in head to head tests. Better light transmission and optical clarity. Surprising as it isn't in the same price range.

SH, the 30mm tube scopes are too heavy and bulky for my style of hunting AND they make my rifles poorly balanced. I had a Leupy LPS on my Dakota 76-.338 for a few years and it just was not as nice to handle as with a Leupy 1.75x6 which has been my usual scope on this rifle.

You do not need and cannot use the actual functional advantages of the 30mm scope over a 1" scope in BC hunting and most cheap 30mm scopes, like Leupies, Bushnell's etc., DO NOT have "innards" any larger than their 1" scopes do, it's a marketing ploy.

For VERY looooong range shooting, (oops, not again!), there certainly IS an advantage in amount of adjustment travel and weight is not an issue here, well, maybe for those who shoot BH rams at 600 yds., but, I find that they do nothing for me under typical BC conditions.

My latest Grizzly-protection gun, a custom .357H&H on a P-64 Mod. 70 cut to 20", using a sts. bbl., wears a Leupy 2.5C MHD and I shoot sub-moa at 100M with 300NPs over a stiff charge of H-4350, what more can you ask for?

I am actually replacing all my .338 scopes with 4x Zeiss Conquests as I can use this to 400 yds. and they are lighter, tougher and the brightest scope for the money, by MY actual range testing, than anything else. Large variables and backpack mountain hunting don't go together to well.

I am leaving for the range and can report on the Swaro and Zeiss 30 mm scopes on my buddies .300 and .338 RUM rifles later.

Default $500 for a scope

I would look on EBAY. I bought my last 3 Leupolds (3 - VX3's with BC reticle ranging from $351 to $575 Canadian with shipping and a VX2 4-12x40AO with the LR duplex for $365.)

If not a VX2 3x9x40 Leupold. are about 375-450 Canadian at retail stores. Burris Fullfield 2 scope or an Elite 3200 4-12x40 or maybe the 5-15x40. I personally prefer the Leupolds.

Thats my 2 bits!

Default its hardly expert advice but here goes...

my suggestion is buy the most expensive highest quality that you can afford then add 30% cost...
cheap out on the gun and max on the glass and mounts.

given the choice, id rather be undergunned than overscoped.
the glass can always travel to your next ryfull.
like sheep said on another thread, good optics are never a waste. I whole heartedly agree.
also, hi end optics have a better resale potential, should the need arise.

Default go online

you can get a zeiss conquest for $400-$450 us, put the bushy and leupy to shame, $600 at wholesale. Also, can get a nikon monarch for under $300us in3 x 9 x 40. Again, outperforms them both. Difficult part is finding the stores who will ship to you, some will some won't

500 buck, I'd purchase a king Optics scope. They're a new to Canada company. Don't know if there's a retalier in Alberta thought. They have a great warrenty. Lifetime on the spot replacement at any of their retailers world wide. One of the best scopes I've seen. For about 500 you can get one of their low light 3-9x40 scopes. My cousin purchases one a few years ago, it's an amazing scope.

Because "**** happens" something to consider in a $500 dollar scope is warranty/ repair turn around time. Jim Korth agencies in Okotoks handle Leupold service issues and they are really quick.

Seems to me I saw the Zess conquest in a German catalogue and it was plainly stamped " Made in the USA", so one has to ask are you really getting a Zeisss scope, or just buying the name. I was in the same boat and my choice was the Bushnell 3200 3x9x 40 Elite. I got the 50 mm objective version first, but most scabbards won't accept anything much over 40, so I put that on my varmint 243 and have never regretted it.

I just bought 3 VXlll 4.5-14x40AO from the US, paid $525cnd each to my door
even with those UPS fees, and no, I didn't buy from Ebay. Have a look down south and save a few bucks. Why buy a Bushnell when you can have a Leupold

Because they are pretty much equal in quality. 4200 is every bit the scope that Vari X III is. Both great optics.

Careful buying scopes south of the border...there are legal issues to consider. Without permits it is illegal to ship scopes out of the U.S. I know it's done all the time but it is illegal.

http://www.kingoptics.com is the addy if anyone is interested. Looks like the only dealer out this way is in Manitoba. Warrenty is definitly one of the first things I would consider before spending alot of money on a scope. I know of a guy who had problems with Bushnell he had to send the scope to them and waited 4 months to get it back. This was a month before deer season, back home in Nova Scotia.
