Default What is the best .300 long range for hunting elk and sheep?

I'm currently in the market for a .300 mag long range, but I need some help with deciding what to buy. I'm gonna be using this gun for elk hunting and sheep hunting and to have fun shooting targets at 1000+ yards.
Also I'd like to know what scope would be the best for this application.
I'll be loading my own ammo as well so any good recipes are welcome.
Thanks everyone.

I'm not a long range shooter, but to me the platform, scope would be the first thing I would look at. All 30 calibre magnums are capable of making the shot distance. Accuracy depends on you, the load and the quality of your equipment. I'm partial to 300 Weatherby, as it's as good as any out there, but I also have had 300 win Mag, 308 Norma, as well the 300WSM. Again, any of them will do the job.

Im partial to the 300wm of the choices listed above it will do everything you need and components like brass are cheaper and easier to find its a superb round for long range work

300 Win or 300 Wby, depending on if you care about the price of brass. Either is just fine.

As for the scope, i would suggest Nightforce, Swarovski Z5 or Huskemaw. If those are out of budget then i would take a look at the Leupold VX5 lineup.

A 300wm 1:10 twist throated so you can shoot a 200gr+ bullet seated with the base of the bullet even with the bottom of the neck will get you out well past a 1000 yards.

This is all fine and dandy. How heavy do you want this rig to be? See, I would pack a rifle over 9lbs all up after sheep or elk. I prefer 8lbs and 7 would be better.

I'd use a 308 Norma Mag. Throat it for 200 or 210gr LR.

.300 Win Mag would be the second choice.

I'd build it on a titanium action, use a Wildcat stock and probably a Proof light Sendaro barrel for kicks. Top it with a Swaro Z5 3.5-18.

Partial the the .308 NM just not with the 1-12 twist my Belgian Browning Safari has for 200gr + bullets or get the new .300 Norma mag recently adopted by the military for sniping.

Smokinyotes is correct. I’d throat it for 215 Bergers. Did mine with a custom reamer from PTG. Works awesome. 215’s at 3000 fps with H1000.

My long range hunting rifle wears a Vortex Razor AMG 6-24x50 weighing 28.8oz. Worth looking at.

Good suggestion. Shot one with a brake, and it recoiled similar to my .280 Rem. Very impressive cartridge anyway.

the new 300 Norma hands down
don't mistake this for a 308 norma magnum
if I was looking at a long range rifle that's what I would have built probably on a Remington or sako action
28 inch barrel
with a good high end tactical Burris or Schmidt & Bender or night force scope

Nice scope but if the OP is looking for a long-range sheep rifle he would be better off putting a Swarovski Z5 5-25x52 BT on top of it at 11 ounces lighter. I have one and on the scales it sits bare at 17.5oz. 11oz is a lot when guys spend thousands to trim that off a rifle.

Or save thousands and shoot a rifle you’re comfortable with at long ranges and worry about taking 11 ounces off the waist.... or a few pounds, just how I see long range hunting rifle debate.

I once went up 6 hours through hell going after goats with my heavy barrel .308 I built up for a bear rifle. Packed it around for a week then hiked down in 4 hours. Wasn’t planning on taking it up but decided to last minute and I didn’t bring my mountain rifle. It weight 9 lbs with 4 rounds, I didn’t notice it being heavy at all. But that’s just me.

I shoot a 308 Norma with a Nightforce SHV. Very accurate to 1700 yards. Plenty of energy for long shots on game.

What your asking for is going to be a rifle of compromises. It will be okay at a few things but not excel in any. Caliber wise, if you load your own, will be tough to beat the 300wm. 3000 FPS with a 215 Berger is hard to beat. Ammo is readily available. Supplies are common. Lots of perks. On the rifle 8lb would be a good weigh if you want it to be comfortable to shoot. If you go lighter you lose shootability, if you go heavier you lose portability. If you go carbon fiber titanium. You lighten your wallet. Optics, the best ones in my opinion are the Leupold vx6 hd, Swarovski z5 and ZEISS v6. Giving up some features to save some weight. Another choice would be a 26 or 28 nosler. Lots of choices and options

Exactly! If you are concerned with rifle weight make sure you have a sling that distributes the weight to you comfortably and you arn't packing a spare tire.

Nothing wrong with a 300win but I really wanted some jam at long range I build a 300 norma, not to be confused with the 308 norma.

Someone else mentioned trade offs. No kidding. When I think of a good sheep /elk rifle, I lean hard to light and easy to carry and move with. When I think of long range shooting, I think of heavy and stable. Hard to have both without compromise. Perhaps a midddle of road approach would be a .300 WSM (short action) chambering in a stainless, synthetic stocked rifle of with an accuracy guarantee, topped with a good scope with turrets. You didn’t mention price range, but if you have the coin, a Christensen Ridgeline or HS Precision SPL with a Leupold VX6 or a Mark 8 might be a solid option. You might even be able to get away without a spotting scope on a sheep hunt. Something along those lines anyway...

"I'm gonna be using this gun for elk hunting and sheep hunting and to have fun shooting targets at 1000+ yards. "

well..I use a Parker Hale Super Safari in 308 NM..22ish inch barrel .
Nice and light good shooter to 600 m. Its got an bunch of elk and a goat.
I like to hunt not snipe.
Would I spend a bunch of time and $ trying to make it a 1000yd bench/tact shooter?
No.
Factory 300 Win Mags are all over the place to fill that fetish.
Try a Sendero.
Never met a shooter with one that didn't love it for everything from mice to moose.
Fit it with some good optics and you've got your 1000 yarder.

I probably would go with a 7mm Mag of some sorts. Just saying.

Tootles all...

Get a Christensen arms ridgeline or classic in 7mm or 300 win, shoot out to 1000 no problem for plinking and a very solid 600 yard rifle for big game, you can go further but that's where my comfort zone is.

You can put a good zeiss on it the v6 and v8 in the victory line or the victory ht with asv system, both have extremely clear glass and are not over weight.

My 300 win shot great and I only went out to 700 yards no problem at all with my turret with 180 accubonds and you will be pleased ,had no more room to go futher. If you need a scope I have couple kickin around that are new in the box.both zeiss ht's only a few month's old SFP with plex reticle.I won't touch another Swarovski ,I had 3 z6's and ditched them all.I don't like a reticle that's to busy and the less crap on the lens the better I feel, just my personal liking.

There's a few demo's for these rifles in a couple stores in Canada that are just display models you can save as much as 30 percent if your lucky.

Buy whatever you like, but by something you like that will last for some time and easy access to barrels if you wear one out, that's fast and cheap to install.

If it's on my hunting rig I don't like to start at 5 or 6 power,2.5 x15,3x12 due to using your scope from heavy bush I want a wide field of view close in for fast shots and enough power for plinking.19 oz in a scope is plenty,30 oz's is is just to much of difference to haul around.

Either way.best of luck on you quest for your new hunting rig and target rifle.

Different perspective. Build two rifles.

One for long distance target shooting. 300 win Mag with a 30" heavy barrel, whatever scope you like, total gun weight about 12 LBs. This way I get good performance, enough weight to shoot easily and decent barrel life. This one would have a brake on it full time so I can see my bullet trace and spot my shots. You can get pretty close to this spec pretty much off the rack. Wear muffs and ear plugs when shooting any braked rifle.

Second one max 8 lbs all in for a hunting rifle. Max 25" barrel with a Swaro Z5 3.5x18x44 BT with BRH reticle. This one I would do in 300 RUM, with a brake for sighting and load development and a screw on cap for hunting.

If you can only do one I would start with the second one.
