Likewise. I do an initial bore sight by sighting through an empty chamber. Then I fine tune by placing an empty casing without a primer in the chamber and sight through the flash hole.
Thats a good idea i bore sight at a hundred by eye as well with bolt actions but the empty case idea would make for a little closer guess. The redneck peep sighter you should call it lol
For bore sighting I've found the Leupold Magnetic Boresighter to be pretty handy. Gets you "close", usually one or two shots at 25 to fine tune. Zero at 100 or 200 (depends on the calibre) and zero out the turrets. Then I'll proceed to shoot at 100/200/300 to get the dope for those ranges.

I have a Bushnell magnetic bore sighter as well as though laser casing inserts. Honestly though, none of these 2 devices yield as good of a result as the "hillbilly peep sight".
I bore sight mine as we'll. typically 100 then sight for 200 but once in a while 200. Nailed the tiny v ring at 200 once , once , bore sighting. Few more for confirmation. Lol.
