Default Fishin Tips and Tricks

Hey all,
Had a cool idea for a thread this afternoon, now i have a few minutes to post it.

Lets start a thread of fishing knowledge tidbits people have learned over the years. Maybe its a certain knot or possibly a good way to bait a hook, whatever little tricks you use when your out.

I'll start off with a little trick i learned at the Outdoor Show and Sale last year.

You take a cotton ball and throw it in your jars off powerbait dough, then when you go to use it you pull off a little piece of cotton and work your dough into it. It looks exactly the same as without the cotton but it wont come flying off your hook when you cast, infact it requires pliers to get it off!

Keep em going...if you want

If planning on using maggots as bait always have 2 options on hand. Some day's white is the ticket and others red is the ticket. Better to be prepared!!!

If trolling for pike, a length of banana peel makes good bait.

I'm not sure if he was serious, but when I was about 16 I was using a banana peal for bait on a pickerel rig. Never had a hit, but when I started to reel in fast so I could catch up with my friends the peel started to skim across the top of the water and.......... Wham!!! 16lb pike nailed it. I could see it working when you troll I guess.

When your ice fishing for perch and they don't want to hit the lure, bounce it off the bottom like it's digging a hole. I have induced a strike this way a few times. Like a worm digging a hole, it seems they don't want to let it get away.

If you want to keep a worm or a minnow or a leech on a jig better, try sticking a little piece of gulp or power bait plastic on after threading your bait on. Helps me in the summer from losing a ton of leeches to light biting walleyes and perch.

You can also use elastic chunks of elastic bands to achieve this as well.

When you tie your jig head for ice fishing or jigging, slid the line the same direction as the hook. When jigs hit the bottom and rests it helps keep your minnow up a little making it easier for the fish to pick up.
In summer when you catch that slimy jack, don't lift it out of the water when you take your hook out and it won't kick as much. You won't have to worry about getting a treble hook in the hand when he kicks. Just don't drop the pliers.

A couple of obvious ones but....

Don't net pike, they go nuts when you do.

Cradle Walleyes by their bellies in the the palm of your hand and they won't move!!

later

Thumbs up gulp alive containers

the reason your gulp alive containers leak is because you pull the seal under the cap off and the glue they put on that seal leaves residue and therefore leaks. So when you buy one cut an x in the centre of the seal and it won't leak

I cut the X in the last 2 buckets I bought and they both leaked on my boat. So I just ended up buying a container with a silicone seal around it that clips shut from walmart and put all my gulp into it. Hasn't leaked since and I have booted it across the boat on accident a few times.
