Default Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather

I had a chance to handle one of these in 30-06 Yesterday. While the stock was a little on the "obese" side, what a great rifle. The fit and finish were top notch, the bolt butter smooth, and the stock plenty stiff. If I were right handed I might have bought the thing right there. A set of Leupold DD low mounts and a fixed 6X Leupold would make this a go anywhere do anything lifetime rifle. For the budget conscious shopper, this as a single big game rifle in the safe amortized over 25 years of hunting would be nothing short of a bargain.

How about tossing that into a McMillan and then you would be set...think of all the money you would save having one rifle. That extra cash could go towards hunting trips.

Ya but if you were right handed you'd have a pre '64 model 70..

Ya, I've shot the Extreme Weather a fair bit and I too was impressed. They do offer a pretty limited calibre assortment though.

As a lefty I thought their chamber offerings were vast!

My limited handling of the rifle, for the money, I preferred the Ruger. It just felt better and cost significantly less. Still would replace the stock though.

The Rugers are great rifles, but the M70 sitting in a McM Edge can be alot lighter rifle.

I like the look of the new EW alot. Just not crazy about the fluted barrel. Shoulda been an old fashion FW contour, IMO...

Wish they'd left the trigger design alone also. Just executed it better from the factory...

Beautiful rifle. If they offered it in 7mm Rem Mag, it would likely replace the majority of the hunting rifles I currently have. Of course, that would be after I replaced the stock with something different - I find the grip way too swept/shallow/short for my hand, but do not mind the forend.

I'm going to have to go handle one of the new ones.....havent played with one yet! Might be a good rig to look at and tossing in a new McMillan. A 30-06 would be a heck of a choice for an all-around rig....

Thanks for the tip man! Did you handle one in the Lethbridge WSS?

It was there.

I would hunt with it as is and order and/or save my pennies for an Echols Legend McMillan EDGE from D'Arcy Echols. That would be a fantastic setup for sure.

Good news for you then...the 7mm Rem Mag is a new offering this year. Enjoy.

Also brought in the 338 win mag this year too.

Went by WSS today and handled the same rifle Chuck. Great handling rifle! Overall I was impressed. I gotta say I'm still not a HUGE fan of the B&C stock and a McMillan would sure make it a sweet rig!!

For me that would probably be a must as well.

A guy could probably get a few bucks for the B&C stock though and with a nice McMillan it would be a heck of an all-around rifle. In 30-06 it wouldnt leave much to be desired!

I think it would be a pretty serviceable rifle for just about anything you could throw at it.

That's what I have done (30-06) but it really makes it hard to justify buying another big game rifle.

When was justification ever required to buy a rifle...

The fact that it weighs in at 7 pounds is one good excuse. I think it would be a great rifle for deer, elk, etc but I can't see myself packing one in the mountains.

True....a little Rem 700 Mtn SS in 30-06 or a Finlight would sure fit the bill nicely for the hills....

Or an A7.....

I'm going to rebarrel my old Model 70 but if I didn't have it, I could definitely find a place for one of these new ones in my safe.

Are you getting old, what kind of crazy talk is that? I have many Model 70s in the safes but I still found room for a new EW in 300WM. It came in yesterdays mail.

I just bought the winchester 70 extreme weather in 270 along with a leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 two days ago. I dont know much about this rifle and hope it will shoot some nice groups. haven't tried it out yet cause i was waiting for some low Talley rings. So is this a good rifle?

Well...you bought it so its a bit late to be asking!

You just read a full thread on it, and almost all posts were positive. I'd say that combined with the fact that you purchased it, makes it a good rifle for you!

I have one in 30-06. I got a pretty good deal on it. It was on the used shelf at a gunshop. The gun wasn't used though, it had two chips in the stock from a fella handling it and actually dropped it in the store and chipped it under the stock near the trigger guard. It was regular 900 and I got it for 750 tax in. I have been out to the range with it and it really likes the 165 gr orange box federal. Right around .8" groups. Like the look and feel and love the trigger and the smoothness of the action. It's got a vx-III2.5-8x36 and fits well for what I'm doing.

I'm a bit more of a blued walnut type than you guys are, but I am surprised the gun sells for over $200 more than the featherweight.
