Default Extended Long Weekend in the Manitoba Parkland

Tiger Trout and large Rainbows after our return from the Parkland Region in Manitoba for an extended long weekend. People from all over North America were enjoying the incredible fishing. Money was pouring into the local economy, all because of some stricter regs and the addition of aeration. The only draw back was the chilly and windy weather but we persevered and caught some good fish. D had never caught Tigers before and loved it. Love to see some Tigers here but again we know that Alberta's stocked trout lakes management is archaic at best. Sorry for the political ramblings, enjoy the pics.

D's colorful Rainbow

26" Rainbow biggest of this trip a good fish to end the trip on.

I'll assume the Tigers came from Twin and that 26"'er is awesome... I'll say either Patterson or Tokaryk?

Were you there for Phil's workshop?

Hi Guys,

Nice fish! Mind if I ask your technique for catching those guys (flies, depth, etc)? I will be heading out to a splake lake soon and have never caught one before. Do you think splake would take the same type of fly as a tiger trout?

Thanks in advance.

well if it is "soon" as in within the next week or two - the splake will still be shallow and for splake I exclusively use minnow pattern flies. If you weight much longer you better have some good electronics, they suspend all summer at the thermocline, and since that varies in different area's of the lake and also on a daily basis, they are incredibly hard to catch mid summer. PM me if you would like specific info on the lake you are headed to (if it is in Sask)

Cool. Thanks TyreeUM. I just moved from Alberta to ON and my map of Algonquin Park shows lots of lakes holding splake. I'm going to be paddling around in a canoe and wouldn't know the first thing about catching them. Aside from Spray Lake lakers ice fishing, I've not done any trout fishing in lakes.

will you have a boat, float tube, pontoon, or what? If you are driving through sask and are looking for a place to hit up on the way let me know - Sask has some of the most under rated trout fishing in the province. My goal for the end of the summer is to have at least 2 new line class tiger trout records from a lake here.

Nice. I may be back in Sask this summer for a bit but am already in Barrie. I grew up in Sask but didn't do much trout fishing. Tried Piprell once and a couple other lakes in that area, Bone creek in the SW for browns, and a few stocked rainbow ponds here and there. Of course Deif as well (what a hayday that was for a few years after the nets broke). Never splake or tigers though, and much of my fishing was from shore.

I will have a canoe in the lakes I'll be going to. Splake, rainbow, lake, and brook trout are all in the area.

Tiger trout can be caught up along the banks right in the reeds or find the drop off's. Leaches, minnow patterns or matching the hatch just like any other trout.

For Splake -Shallow side of the drop off's right now and then find the thermocline in a few weeks.
