Better make that call again. There is a Government of Alberta brochure called "Trapper Cabins, a policy for use" that clearly states size, length of time a cabin can be used etc. Maybe you talked to somebody who isn't aware.

24 X 24 is correct, or anything that equals 576 square feet I suppose. One outbuilding that doesn't exceed 12 X 12 I think is in the brochure as well. Can't remember the number of days allowed for stay but I think it is considerable, as is the cabin size. But, if it isn't enforced, I guess it doesn't matter.

Default Cabin Policy

The new cabin rules mimmic the old cabin policy. The main cabin is max. 24x24 and you are allowed two line cabins 16x16 not including storage sheds. The cabins are now being "cateloged" by SRD and there will be some grandfathering allowed as long as the cabin size is reasonable. I would expect the policy to rule and enforcement to be in place by Spring which is a good thing. Regardless of the hype of "mansions" and "cottages" I have yet to see real proof of any such structures. A picture is worth a thousand words. The cabins that SRD were out burning this Winter were NOT Trapper cabins, they were cabins constructed by non-RFMA holders to fish and hunt from. Case in point cabins around Cranberry Lake and Long Lake in the Red Earth District.

The maximum stay is six months. If you are really working the line and doing trail management that's lots.
