You could see the tarsal gland size and location?

“Metatarsal Glands: The only physical character that can be used to accurately diagnose a hybrid in the field is the metatarsal gland, which is located on the outside of the lower portion of the rear legs. The metatarsal glands on mule deer sit high on the lower leg and are 4 to 6 inches long and always surrounded by brown fur. The whitetail’s metatarsals are below the mid-point of the lower leg, less than 1 inch long, and surrounded by white hairs. A white- tail/mule deer hybrid has metatarsal glands that split the difference in location, appearance and length (between 2 to 4 inches).”

Congrats on the beautiful deer. Good on you to post the picture also. No shame at all with the question of hybrid. Good luck with the rest of the season.

That is exactly the reason I will never judge anyone for having doubts about a Deer's blood line.

There is so much variety among individuals of both species that even the most experienced hunter have doubts at times.

It's the inexperienced and the know-it-alls that think they can tell the difference at a glance.

I see in the photos that this Deer is a Whitetail, or a hybrid.
The OP properly identified it befor shooting as far as the law is concerned.

For anyone to suggest otherwise is unfortunate at best. For a fellow hunter to make that suggestion is alarming.

If we judge rather then educate our fellow hunters, hunting is doomed.

I hope this is a joke ? If not then you should know it is a partially hedged crop and the farmer suggested I go hide in it as the deer are loving it. I also drug my buck out on a sleigh instead of driving in because I’m not an ass... I either have permission from the farmer to be there or I own the crop so perhaps you should consider your own words “”No Respect” before posting and making assumptions?

Not the case at all ? I felt he had hybrid qualities when I was in the field and posted about it . I’m very sorry you feel the need to attack people based on false assumptions.

18 posts in eleven years and that's the best you can do?

Yeah, I'm sure the farmer will be combining that high dollar crop any day now.

If not tomorrow, for sure the next day!!!

his hybrid qualities were your own inability to see that it is a WT , plain and simple. Just do more listening than talking and you'll be fine.

Yes this exactly right ? I had to check three times before I took my shot. I needed to be 100% sure it was a WTD and the massive body, big ears and small antlers facing me head on gave me the alarm bell to double, triple check.

Ignore them, you should be proud of your restraint, it’s great to see you gals finding success in the field! It’s women like you that are gonna get my sisters into hunting one day! Congrats!

I'm with you there. Pay no attention to the small equipment crowd.
More ladies in the field can only be very good for hunting.

I hope your sisters do get into hunting. I am at present hunting with one of my sisters and have hunted with another sister years ago.

My daughter took her first Moose with me acting as guide. My neighbor's wife is an awesome hunter.

My best hunting memories were made with a woman holding a rifle and a tag.

Too many guys are too obsessed with proving how skilled or how smart they are, to be good companions or good hunters.

There are exceptions of course. There are a couple of guys I hunt with. But if one of my sisters wants me to go hunting with them, I put everything else on hold.
