Default Model 70

I’ve got a model 70 stainless I just picked up. Love the actions. Think it’s about 1991 vintage. Push feed in an HS precision stock. Chambered in 300 Win mag. I’m thinking about doing a build on it and have a few questions for any model 70 experts here. Not sure on chambering yet but I don’t want a 300. It will be 7mm, 6.5 prc or something there about.

Who would be the most experienced Smith in Alberta for model 70’s?
Should I ditch the 2 piece bottom metal?
Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

PM Chuck. He has build a lot of guns on Model 70 Actions. Probably the best guy on AO to talk to about that specific rifle.

A stainless push feed is a rare bird. Nice action.

Nothing special about rebarreling a push feed Model 70. Any smith can do it.

You could do a 7mm Rem Mag which is the 7mm I assume you are referring to without any changes to the action.

Your mag box will be blocked at about 3.40" which is not overly long for a short magnum like the 6.5 PRC. You will have lots of room to seat long bullets and still fit the mag box.

I wouldn't bother changing the two piece bottom metal unless you have to have a detachable setup.

PM me your number and we can chat if you like. I've had a few built and, in fact, have two being worked over as we speak. :-)

But Rembo is correct. The push feed should open up several options for you. Don't overlook BC for your gunsmith either, there are some good ones there also. Their triggers are exceptional if the right guy works them over and there are some options for bottom metal upgrades, but they are getting less and less that's for sure. However, the nice thing about the stainless ones is that the factory bottom metal is all steel. No pot metal. Synthetic stocks are also a bit tougher to find than say a Remington option as well. My favourite rings for tham are Leupold dual dovetails with screws that straddle the dovetail slot both on front and rear bases. For feeding in your current set up, go with the 7mm Rem Mag.
