Default Ruger #1

Just curious, why dont we see more of ruger no 1s being sold by the major firearms retailers up here? Id love to see more single shot rifles ruger or pedersoli sharpes on our market just to name a few. Is this a federal border thing or a gun control issue?

The number ones are not regular production rifles any more, Ruger only makes a few limited production models every year.

They are fine shooters and I'd love to own one in 4570 or even .223

It's an issue with the manufacturer.
Ruger has chosen to really hold back on making scads of No. 1's over the last half dozen years. They are only producing specific chamberings each year as well.

Clay at Prophet River can explain the nuances far better than I can, so drop him a line.

Second to the manufacturing position is the fact that between the price point and the fact that the rifles are single shots pretty much makes them a nearly custom proposition. They were spendy, and are a niche item catering to a small sub sect of the demographic.
In other words Ruger makes and sells way more 10/22's and American's than No.1's.
It's all about the ROI, and making their investors happy.

Most big box sporting stores order and stock what sells. Ruger Americans. Savage Axis and Remington 783 and SKS guns pay the bills. Ruger #1 and Winchester Supergrades just sit.

Well, there is a really nice No. 1 in 280 Rem sitting at Shooter's Choice. If I had the loot, it would be sitting in my basement.

It's no secret that I love single shots and Ruger single shots in particular.
I would have s hard time buying new , the older used on s seem to have nicer wood on them .

Ruger used to make the No. 3 as well, kind of a simpler No.1. Always wished I'd picked one up.

I always dreamed of the Ruger #3 in 375 win. Never found one.

Yes, not too many people are willing to pay $1800 for a single-shot rifle with increasingly mediocre wood and average workmanship. The scope mounting dovetails make it difficult to mount many scopes rearward enough without buying more expensive rings, and they are generally a heavy rifle for what they offer.

That being said, I do love them for both their look and their uniqueness and have to have at least one on hand. There's something captivating about a Ruger No.1, but its following has diminished in recent years.

Simple economics . I've been involved in retail and even when Ruger #1 were popular I would guess one sold for every 300 bolt actions

The Ruger #1 and #3 use exactly the same working mechanism . The difference were the lever style , wood and barrel configurations .

x2 ... and I think Lipsey's has worked some kind of deal with Ruger for #1 production going forward ... once again, check with Clay

No I don't think so - the B78 was a Miroku made rifle and the salt wood guns were mainly Superposed shotguns by FN between about 1965 and 1972
Apperently some of the FN rifles contained salt wood as well however, I remember checking a Safari grade in 264 that I suspected was a salt wood gun
But the owner didn't want it repairs because he thought it would ruin it as s collector - it clearly was not worth what he thought it was !

I have the No.3 in 22 hornet and always wanted the No1 in 375 H&H, but when the time come I went with the Winchester 1885. I am happy with that decision but I do however still look twice when I see a No1 in a 375 or 280Rem. But with the cost now I think I'll move on to other wants. I guess you never know what might fall into your lap in years to come. Hard to get my head around the $1895. though.
