Default Gun Safe/Cabinet? Where to buy?

Hi there, Im lookin into getting some firearm storage and I cant decide exactly what I want. I don't want to spend a pile of cash on one, but its like buying a welder or a tool box; just buy a good one once, and never need to upgrade.

That being said, I want to start collecting guns. Im not an avid hunter, just like GUNS. I was thinkin of buying a larger gun SAFE (for handguns, ammunition, and expensive guns) and then a gun cabinet beside it for crappy guns, accessories, etc.

Where's the best place to buy these? Do people generally sell them used? I want to make a post in the buy/sell thread but Im not allowed to!

Canadian tire sells a 16 Gun safe for $450 right now, and a 24 gun safe for $1000. however I dont know how reputable Stack-On is?

What do you have to store your guns?

Should I wait for a good Costco or season blowout sale somewhere?

Wholesale sports, P & D, or Cabelas, have the actual "safes" but I've never seen them go on any sort of a meaningful blowout sale. Usually 10 or 15% off if you're lucky. The stack on cabinets usually go on sale for 50% at Cdn Tire a couple times a year.

I dont know how overkill I wanna go in a 'safe', being burglar proof... fire resistant... etc. But I may as well get something HALF decent right?

Is stack on a reputable brand around here? Should I even consider buying used?

Spend the money and be at ease. You can store pictures valuable documents expensive scopes binos etc. you want something that is fireproof as well as burglar proof. I purchased a bank vault from Calgary lock and safe. It weighs 4000 lbs and has a fire rating of 1 1/2 hrs at 1200f. I picked this one up for $1500.00

Costco's website has more safes to choose from than you'll ever see in store and the prices look pretty good. Wholesale Sports and Bass Pro both have reasonable selections. I've seen some different ones at Battle River Sports in Stettler that seemed priced alright, but are probably offshore manufactured.

Default Bass Pro?

Does Bass Pro have a decent selection of safes in stock?

The last times I've checked they had next to nothing.

I bought mine from Bass Pro about a month and a half ago. They did have a good selection then but I went in to browse about six months before that and Rocky is right they had virtually no selection. At WSS I could not get any service as no one knew who handled opening the safes to look inside.

I was happy with the Bass Pro staff and when it was time to load I didn't have to touch it, the shipping guys looked after it all. Unloading though I am glad I own a Bobcat..LOL.

Whatever you purchase, pick one rated for twice as many guns as you ever intend to own. The ratings that the manufacturers use, are wishful thinking at best. I have a lockup now, and plan on building an actual gun/loading room in my retirement home.

WSS prices are steeper and, as you say, my feeling is that I'll get better service and a better deal at Bass Pro.

They had a good selection of nice safes last year. I thought I'd think about it some more.....and you know the rest of that story!
