id try to acquire a (higher quality) used rifle/scope combo before i look at a entry level new rifle.
plus id consider a higher quailty scope
scope, rings and bases should be equal to (or even surpass) gun budget.

Agreed, the package guns are priced low for a reason, while the guns are good, the scopes leave alot to be desired. And I'm not talking about the burris packages mentioned earlier, they would be good, but they are out of the $500 range for sure.

If you want to avoid all the hassle buy the gun HunterDave suggests. Check the reviews. 30 of them there, all good. The gun will work well for a starter. Others may suggest "better" guns or optics, but at higher prices. If this is your limit this set-up will work and get you in the game. In a few years you will get your bonus and then it's Sako topped with a Leupold time!

If it's all you can afford it's all you can afford.

Roger, he's mentioned budget restraints a couple times and that $500 or so is all he can afford. Can he get a combo of the sort you envision for $500?

Like Roger said, you won't get a top of the line scope/rings on the package deal that I suggested to you but they are good enough to get the job done. The rifle is accurate but not fancy so you'll have no problem there. Given your budget that's the way that I'd go and next year I'd invest in a good quality scope/rings to top the rifle with. If you decide that you want to upgrade your rifle with something nicer the following year you can buy the rifle and already have the quality scope to put on it. Put the package scope back on your old rifle and sell it to offset your costs on the new rifle or keep it as a backup rifle.

Depending on what your price range is???
For around 700 you can pick up a remington sps in 300 win mag. It looks to be a fairly good deal, but ive never shot one. Or if you wanna go even cheaper look at a stevens model 200 or a mossberg 4x4 like bearbait said.
I did own a savage 111 and it was an ok rifle. Fairly decent shooting for the price roughly 450$ Mine was a 7mm rem magnum. Good Luck
I have a Rem. 300 win mag, sps. Buckmaster Edition. Works great and I love it. I put a 4200 Elite, Bushnell (4 -16). Rifle was around $650 and scope was about 450/500 bucks. Couldn't be happier with it. Would be a good choice if that's what your looking for.

I got a savage package deal a few years back for my birthday and they are good rifles mind you i took the gun apart put some fiberglass in the stock to add some wieght and also through a high end bushnell scope on top of it and that rifle has droped lots of game and has a super smooth action! I know alot of people bad talk Savage/stevens but they are deadly accurate and very reliable. Most competitive shootes are shooting a savage or stevens and winning on them.

Easy with the MOST competitive shooters are using Savage/Stevens..there are a lot more than competitions..won with a Remington based or Bat action than a Stevens /Savage action.

I've never heard anybody really badmouth a Savage. I think it comes down to whether you want to pickup the groceries with a Chevy, or a Caddilac.

Hey Chad, I'm In DV as well, my advice is take a little drive out to Entwistle and go to Moving Target, give old Ed a hard time and see what kind of deal he'll cut you. He loves the abuse and usualy has Mossberg or Savage rifles for reasonable prices.
