Default Ice Fishing Today!!!!!!!!!!

was out near edson, hinton today - wind was blowing hard. some dude and his kids were just leaving, said he checked the ice and it held him up but he didn't fish. so i went out and fished right out of the hole he cut with his axe. saw 3 right away and caught one, about 13-14 inches.

Ice was about 2.5 inches thick, but pretty milky and not great... firs ice fish! I win!

Impressive.. I'm very jealous too.. I cant wait to go icefishing. Speaking of which... I don't have a hand auger anymore... I used one last year when iwas on 2-3inches of ice... but now What should I do? Should I axe a hole open or should i find a hand auger or what?

Do you mean you have a power auger but you dont want to drag it out when the ice is so thin?? Or are you asking if an axe or hand auger works better for drilling holes through the season? Because an axe works fine for 2,3, even 5 or 6 inches of ice but beyond that it would be pretty crappy. You can get a decent eskimo handauger for 50 bucks, or spend 80 and get a nice Finbore.

Come borrow my 6" auger that is on the drill and punch some holes when the ice is thick enough. With 2 full batteries you should be able to punch 30 holes easy through 3-4" of ice.

Using an axe for up to 5 inches is quite do-able. I will usually just do this for early ice as I know where to go and don't have to punch more than three holes. Once you get around 6 inches, it becomes too much of a task. If you fish for smaller trout and perch, a 6 inch hand auger will do and a 6 incher (kept razor sharp) will cut through 10-15 inches of ice as fast as a 10 inch power auger will.

Good luck, have fun.

I'm pretty sure if he had fallen in it would have meant wet boots and a few steps to shore.

Are you taking off today man? If so, have a safe trip and a speedy/full recovery.
