Default Should I try deep or shallow water

I suck at ice fishing and hoping to change that.

This time of year fish tend to be deeper or closer to shore? I am going to work isle lake this winter. This weekend I will start off looking for pike and maybe whitefish (never have caught one but first for everything!)

Which isle lake? The one west of edmonton, close to wabamun winter killed last year. I am going to try it once this winter but I dont think i will have much luck. I hope im wrong as there were nice perch in there and lots of walleye. You might have better luck at saint anne or nakamun or somewheres else. Start at about 12 fow and go shallow or deeper from there till you find something. 12 or 14 fow is a good starting point. Be carefull of the ice at this time of year, could be 6" one place and 1" another. Would not want to see someone get wet or worse, drowned!! Do a test hole in say 5 fow first and check the ice often. south east sides of most lakes freeze later so the ice will be thinner there.

Like Kim and HunterDave said, don't bother with Isle this year...you won't improve your ice fishing any
