Default Baja fishing, warmimg up!

Hey Y'all

I have had a couple of opportunities in the last couple of weeks to get out on the water and enjoy some beautiful weather, low wind, and steady fishing. Through a friend, I tracked down a fly-fishing licensed guide; he has been very good both times, and reasonably priced, like many things in this part of the Baja.

The fishing is being done surprisingly close to shore, and the action is mainly steady with late morning-mid day being the best it seems. So far in two trips we have caught; 2 Skip Jack, 8 white Bonita, 1 Yellow Tail tuna (Amber Jack), 5 Dorado, and 1 Rooster Fish.

Highlights so far; sight casting a sardine fly to a cruising Dorado, having him turn and slam it, on the second cast, run into the backing, jump three times, and throw the fly. Too fun! Also the strength of the Rooster fish was something to remember!

Enjoyed a nice Bonita sashimi dinner last night, mmmmmm! The freezer is getting pretty full, so swing on by for a nice bag or two, next time you're in the neighborhood!

Cheers, Ayr.

I got out on the Panga again last Friday and it was a fun day on the fly rod. First we set up off the front edge of a reef near an island in about 30 feet of water. Fished there for about an hour and caught several fish in the 1-3 lb. range, two different kinds of triggers, and other colorful reef fish. Then we decided to move over to another shoreline to see if the Pargo had moved in there to spawn yet. Funny thing happened about half way over.....we hit upon a school of these Bonito and Skip Jack busting bait on the surface.

They put a pretty good bend in the 10wt

and after fighting 6-7 of these back to back with hits like a freight train, initial and secondary runs well into the backing, I had to fight the next 5-6 like this;

After about an hour and a half of steady action with these guys we continued on to the shoreline. Once there the fishing was steady and the sardine fly picked up a variety of species; Cabrilla,

some form of snapper that the guide said was the first his boat had ever caught on the fly in 17 years....can't remember the right name...

We also picked up Sierra mackerel and needle fish on the fly that day.
On conventional gear we picked up a Rainbow Runner, which the guide said he hadn't caught since Oct. so that was cool.

Cleaning the fish at the end of the day, workin' hard or hardly workin' eh?

Mine, mine, mine, mine!

Cheers,
Ayr.

Spent a few days in Los Barriles this week fly-fishing the beach, running down the man, some hallowed ground we're walking here;

The roosters proved elusive this time around, but they are showing up, along with some BIG Jack Cravaille, right at your feet! Maybe next time. A rare treat from the beach did make an appearance and made up for it though!
