Default Even Bigger Burbot

Here is my brother with his 13+ lb burbot. He caught 2 like this in an hour just before dark. How common are the big ones? I know the Alberta record is 18+ pounds. I have seen some big ones out of Calling, Pinehurst, Bourque, Lac La Biche, and Slave. How big was the largest Burb you ever saw and where?

That's a beauty, don't see them that big all that often, about as frequently as a 25 lb pike sort of thing. I've only seen one really large burbot ever landed, we were ice fishing a lake by Lethbridge for pike and a guy caught one that was 18 lbs (rapala scale). They never had it officially weighed, they got a pile fillets from it. That was only the second burbot i had ever seen come out of the lake so bit of a surprise.

The biggest burb I ever saw was one I put back down the hole at Travers. 34 inches with a head almost as big as mine.

Weve been catching some Burbs lately but they look like minnows compared to that snake.

Great Job

A good friend of mine caught one that must have been a record. He was to ashamed to bring it in and get it registered. I asked him why and his only response was "it's like bring the big girl home from the party, who want's that rep" Funny for sure.....

The one your brother caught would be the biggest I have ever seen.
Congrats!

Pigeon use to have some up to 10lbs. Late Feb. and early March was great. I would catch them on my Whitefish lures.

They did not fight that great. It felt like you were pulling a log out of the lake.

Too bad, many were wasted by rotting on the ice. Every fish has a purpose to a lake!!

Nice picture. Thanks!!

Default Wow...

That thing is a friggin' monster ! Biggest I ever caught was out of Pine Coulee in LATE summer. Caught 3 in 30 minutes 4, 5 and just over 6lbs. Those were the first Burbot I had ever caught and have never hooked any 'burbs' close to six pounds since !

Cheers,

/FC...

As a kid we used to catch Ling (Burbot) in the Peace all the time and just lay them next to the fire and peel the skin off and eat.. we were true river rats growing up in the middle of no where. one thing I remember and never will forget is my brother in law catching a ling that was from the ground to his waist. I mentioned it to my oldest brother and he just said that used to be common and that they he used to skin them on my grandpa's bench overlooking the river and they would almost cover the entire bench that was five feet long.. I guess it was a lot better fishing before they put the dam in at Hudson Hope. After hearing the record and remembering that fish.. and hearing the tales from my brother makes me wonder if the big ones were ever recorded.. 18lbs doesn't seem right!

Without going into too much detail, I can say there have been 25+ pounders caught in Alberta.

Haven't caught a Burb myself, definitely on the bucket list though..

Had been catching some decent eyes...so I assumed this was a jumbo

It was a jumbo Mariah...it was12 lbs. and a bit.....luckily it got off before

I had to shoot it. I did burn the line and put the jig in Dodgers tackle box for luck

we catch a lot of burbs in the nsr in early spring but not as big as that one. congrats.
as to the biggest burb i've seen you should search fishinggeeks posts. i think he has the alberta record if not the world record.

There are no "BIG BURBOT" in Pine Coulee. Most all are between 2 and 4 pounds. Kinda like the lakers at Spray, all in the 2 lb area.

Best place for big burbot would be Crawling Valley or Traverse.
