Default Search the Firearms Database - Sanitized Version

Search the Firearms Database - Sanitized Version

The Ottawa Citizen is advertising a database that provides information from the RCMP firearm registry database. The information provided is limited to firearms registered within postal code boundaries. Postal code boundaries have been sanitized down to the first two letters of your postal code........so that ner-do-wells cannot drill down to a specific house in rural areas. Why is it important to the Ottawa Citizen to provide this information to the public? I'm sure the Citizen could care less if the database allowed everyone to drill down to your home address.

Ottawa Citizen

Here is a Canada Post link I found that breaks postal codes down to urban areas.

WTF would anyone need this half-@$$ed useless information for??????

The only thing it tells me is that my postal code is well armed and that of those firearms, 103 have been reported stolen including an Ingram M10 Submachine Gun.

Every one in Mill Woods better be on guard!!

Last up dated November 7, 2006.

This is real old news.

Many firearms owners even went as far as contacting the Federal Privacy Commision on this matter.(I did) A lot of noise was made, but no sanction or ruling was handed out, since they deemed that the first two characters of a postal code was not a contravention of the privacy standards.

Most spoke of it as a potential shopping list for firearms.
I saw it as a way of finding no or low gun zones for home invasions.

Either way this data base should never have happened.

It doesn't even do that. It only uses the first two letters/numbers of a postal code. And once you realize that "T1" includes half of Calgary and the surrounding area, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat, it's really useless in terms of helping anyone do anything criminal. It does give some interesting data in terms of the percentage reported lost or stolen of various types of firearms.
