wabamun used to be the best place to catch big pike on flies, biggest was 24 #, and in early spring before ice out.... the big girls hang out in the shallows, have seen bigger fish , but catching them was always hard. when you used to be able to fish there in spring(no closure), the big ones had so many smaller males following that it was almost imposible to get the big ones to bite. it was a pretty cool sight. still some nice sized fish, but the numbers of them has certainly dropped....
The best flies for me were large streamers, about 4-7 inches, dark top and lighter on bottom, moose hair on top was always the best, (cheap and easy to get), no weight, and no steel leader, it let the fly ride really high and not nose dive on a pause, used 20# mono as a leader, it cost me a few fish, but the payback was a very natural riding fly... when brought back just under the surface the hits are almost scary!
