2 guns at range. Both 3oo win megs. Shooting same bullets. One is a win 70 feather wieght No muzzle break. The other a tika stainless fluted with a break. The guys said the model 70 featherweight is way louder then the tika which has muzzle break. From the shooter position the model 70 is same loudness as when stand 3 feet to the side of the tika. Thought breaks made them unbearable too people around you.

I was at the range today. We had 2, 300 win megs with us. One is a win model 70 featherweight with no muzzle break. The second is a tika T3 stainless barrel with a muzzle break. Both of them were shooting the same amunition. The model 70 was way louder standing to the side of it or behind it than the tika. I thought muzzlebreakes made the gun louder to the people around you.

Are the barrel lengths the same?

It's not that muzzle brake's are any louder, it's the increased concussion that goes along with the noise that's objectionable.

Yes barrels are the same length. Even the guys five benches over said the model 70 is ( dam that's loud ) and the shock wave is stronger. Now there is a roof over the benches.

Were both rifles being shot from the same bench? just thinking maybe there was a wall or something that was reflecting the muzzle blast back to the shooter/spectators for the winchester and not so for the tikka?

Both shot from same bench. No changes made between shots. The muzzle break has 16 holes around it and 4 in front of that makes it sound scatter better ?

What brand of brake?

Some brakes direct the gases differently. Could direct in a more forward direction that wouldn't bounce off roof as much. Roof and walls will make a difference on muzzle blast.

I have a semi 233 without a brake that most people find louder than it should be, 20 inch barrel.

It's not about the brand of rifle so much as the barrel length and cartridge .
If one has a brake and the other doesn't and both use the same cartridge and barrel length then someone is imagining things if they say the braked rifle is quieter .

Only one has a brake and that is supposed to be the quieter rifle

Think I may have figured it out. The sound is bouncing off the roof towards the other shooters. The muzzle break is sending back not out to the sides or roof giving it less echo off the roof. Out in the open it is a lot louder

I was wondering there are so many different companies out there that make choke tubes for shoot guns. Does the brand really make a difference? If so what brand do you use and believe in?

I may be over thinking this a little but, they are useing the same bullets but are theses factory rounds or are they handloads with different powder? Some powders are a lot louder then others.

Are the velocities the same as they leave the different rifles?
I do believe there is a sound decibel app for iPhone you could try that.
