Default Purchasing Firearms

I have a P.A.L. but my dad doesn't. He just has a possession license. My Mom wants to buy him a new rifle for his birthday in a few weeks and i was wondering if i bought the rifle could i give it to him as a gift and register it in his name?? Or does he have to have a P.A.L. Tried to find info on the RCMP website but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Firearm purchase

You can purchase the rifle if you want, but he must have a PAL for you to transfer the gun in his name.

He can't legally acquire any firearms that he doesn't currently own without a PAL.

Would he be allowed to even borrow it? If so, that might be an option, if you were to register it in your name, then lend it out to him for an indefinate period

Why not have him upgrade his licence? It's not like he won't have to renew it sooner or later anyways. Make sure he gets restricted status too, even if he doesn't want it. Having a POL is like having a drivers licence that's only good for a 1989 Taurus wagon. Some day you might want a new ride.

A few years ago I bought my dad a Ruger 10/22 for them to bring to their place in Saskatchewan, and kept it until he got a PAL. He and my Step-mom both got licences.

Like this fellow is thinking. Just buy the rifle. For heavens sake, your mother wants to buy your Dad a rifle. Do it. It's registered in your name until he gets a PAL and you transfer it to him....but that isn't going to happen in just a few weeks.......so buy it for him like your mother wants! Get your Dad to go for the PAL later.......no rush.

Happy Birthday Dad

Default thanks

Thanks for all the helpful info. Guess dad will just have to suck it up and get his PAL.

Hope my future wife will buy me a gun for my birthday sometime.
I just hope your mom doesn't have a "plan". I'll buy hubby a new gun for his birthday, then next year he can remodel the kitchen for me
