Default Would a bear skin hat constitute not wasting a bear hide?

Let's just say a guy shot a blackbear that had serious ground shrinkage and he already has a nice rug on the wall.
Would turning the tanned hide into a bear skin hat be enough to be considered not wasting the hide?

Also, anyone with experience with a bear fur lined hat? Wondering if the fur would be too long to be comfortable. I'm thinking a winter hat with ear flaps kinda hat.

Just freezing the hide would constitute not wasting it.

Yes but sooner or later it needs to come out of the freezer.

An Elmer Fudd type hat?

Man - I had one of those made out of full pelt beaver with ear flaps that tied under the chin.
I loved it
Perfect for -20 and below - too warm otherwise

If you are making crafts or clothing out of a bear skin, I would assume the whole hide is being tanned, if you then need to trim the ragged edges and cut out your shapes for the project and throw out the scraps, I can't see a CO or anyone else getting too excited about that.

My buddy got a shoulder mount done on his 1st bear, so how much did the taxidermist throw out when he was done...

I think you are fine to use any bearskin you have for arts and crafts.

Don’t throw the rest of the hide away, keep it. Then who’s the judge to say it’s wasted. Wasted is gone rotten, spoiled dumped somewhere or thrown away.

Any fly tiers out there
There's a ton of Black Bear Green Butts in the scraps...

Just don't leave it where the street people can get at it, for sure it would disappear and then what?

Lol, picturing a street person with a bear hide in their shopping cart. Wouldn't be out of place these days...

Yeah, thanks for the opinions. Never thought about fly tying.
Mitts I've seen and they look great.

Plenty of uses.

I like bear meat enough that I'd go after them more if it weren't for the hide issue. But I get that it's not for everyone.

I paid $1200 for a double felt backed rug and cleaned skull 5 or 6 years ago. From what I've heard the cost has about doubled. It would have to be a pretty special bear to shell out that kind of money....

I can’t imagine a CO has spare time to waste on tracking down who didn’t use exactly 100% of a hide after it’s been processed. I’ve seen many hides tossed out because the hide had worn out due to age or it got wet and molded etc.. what’s the timeline on keeping a hide then? I imagine the purpose of that law is for hunters to make an honest attempt at salvaging the hide and putting as much of it to some use vs just leaving it with the carcass. If an honest attempt has been made I wouldn’t worry about it.

They probably just want to make sure you don't just dump them in the garbage bin.

Maybe next time start the post with "asking for a friend" and throw it in the bush and we would have been none the wiser. Now the CO's are going to find you.... lol.

If I ever get around to shooting another bear, I'm going to have a handwarming muff made for my wife.
I think she would like it, and it would be a great set up for jokes for years to come.

Wink It's good to have a plan.

A bear skin hat like this uses more of the hide, and it sends a message.
